There are people who are against AI. And then... there is me. My name is Pierre, and I'm having the time of my life, building all crazy things. Please don't hate. =( Now, here's the latest: purely automated daily newspaper. You can make your own. Take a shot. The 'code' is FOSS!!! You can look on the repo how it works... This is what is interesting. It is almost entirely open. (& Free, of course.)

What's interesting is that it costs almost nothing to implement and have your own newspaper running on the internet.

It does not look like much, but golly, it is fun!

Note: HN does not like AI much, but it is mandated by law to like dissections! this is allowed by the rules.

So... It costs, currently, 55 cents per edition if not mistaken (we generate only the frontpage, so that's why "Z Frontpage")

How does it work? I don't know, man. I barely remember the tech stack. It just did the best on its own. There are people who are against such an approach. And then...

I'll tell you what I remember. (actually you can just read the Github's README to know precisely how it works!)

So... There was this Claude Fable 5 shell. And I said (precisely):

We had to retrograde to Sonnet 5 because I'm low on cash, these days.

I am trying to replace PowerPoint with a file format better suited for AI. But let me fill you in...

So, I pitch a lot these days, and "make the deck" had become the worst part of my week. I don't know about you, but automation hasn't really worked for me here. Every AI deck tool I tried failed the same way. After various trial and errors, it ends up being fine on screen, but a broken approximation on export, and not one of them would touch my company master. So I was thinking that perhaps the solution is to give AI a format that's just easier to handle - the XML is really bloated and complex, maybe Markdown & YAML would do better.

So, I gave it a shot and it worked. It is called .slaide. It is basically a somewhat customized Markdown to match text with theme defined placeholders and a theme defined in YAML. The markdown has some custom elements for charts, svg, html, etc. to make it valid. All files are then packaged in a zip file (.slaidec). It renders to a web deck, a PDF and a .pptx.

None of the underlying formats are new to AI and that's good about it. First time I tried it, the agent (here my local claude code) managed to come up with some great decks. I only had to tweak the skills a bit to push it from "good" to great. And then I had to think about a hosted version for those without a local agent (or who just want to try it all out for a day) - I added that, too, as well with a manual editor/viewer.

Anyway, the end result is a surprisingly small deck file which renders great on its own and has many of the features covered you'd expect from a presentation viewer. I added a few of them on our website https://getslaide.com for anyone to try. I also made it so that you can import from PPTX and export to PPTX or PDF if you need to. I'd say it is 95% or so accurate (there are some differences in how browsers and pptx renders pixels, hence the difference).

The core is Apache-2.0: language, renderer, CLI, the pptx import and export, the Rust viewer, an MCP server and an agent skill. That skill is the whole reason the format is text at all. Everything local is free. Only the hosted version costs money, because we are paying for the agent on our end, image generation and all. So, all in all, you can just install it via npm or check out the source on Github: https://github.com/aivorynet/slaide

or simply run

"npm install -g @aivorynet/slaide", then "slaide install", and just use your local cli to work with the format. It should support claude, codex, gemini and cursor out of the box, but happy to get some feedback on it (I primarily focused on my hosted build and claude code to be honest - limited resources and all that).

Anyway, would be cool to hear your thoughts. At least for me it did really well across the board, so curious to see if anyone else has the same result.

Hi HN,

I built an Android file viewer that opens PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images, video, audio, Markdown and code, and asks for no permissions at all.

I have always been uneasy about opening files people send me. On Android you either install a 400 MB office suite and sign in or use a small free viewer that wants storage access and ends up uploading your file to a server to render it. Also the hassle of having to download different apps for different file formats was really annoying.

Gander holds no permissions, not even INTERNET so the OS itself guarantees the file cannot leave the phone.

PDFs use Pdfium, media uses Media3, and Office formats are rendered by bundled JS libraries in a WebView and so no request goes to any server.

It is a viewer only. Complex PowerPoint decks come out approximately right, spreadsheet charts are not drawn, and old binary .doc and .ppt are unsupported. I'll work on it as issues come up :P

It is 14 MB, MIT licensed and uploaded on Github releases.

Do try it! I would love some feedback especially on files that render badly or need new support.

Hi HN! We’re Akilan and Miguel, the creators of MarbleOS.

The inspiration for Marble comes from the GUI work at Xerox PARC, the 1984 Macintosh, and later NeXTSTEP, which became the foundation for Mac OS X. Before GUIs, interacting with a computer was limited to strange terminal commands:

You had to remember the command, syntax, paths, and parameters.

The GUI made those capabilities visible. Instead of remembering commands, you could point at files, drag them, click buttons, and select actions from menus. It didn't necessarily make entirely new things possible; it just made existing capabilities much easier to understand and use. We feel like AI is still somewhere around this command-line stage.

Even though the strict syntax has been replaced with natural language, the interaction can still be quite stiff and depend on heavily recall. Tools like Claude Cowork still look surprisingly terminal-like: /skill-name [param1] [param2]. The parameters are written in natural language, but the user still needs to know the capabilities that exist, and how to invoke it. Command-line flags and arguments have just been replaced with tools, skills, and context.

ChatGPT works very well for asking questions, but we aren't convinced that it's the final interface for delegating work across multiple agents. A blank text box and a list of chat threads feels limiting. An agent's capabilities are mostly invisible. With Marble, we're exploring an interface that treats AI more like a workspace than another chat app. Each delegated task becomes a card. Multiple jobs can sit next to each other and run at once. Files, tools, and finished artifacts are visible at once. Before a task runs, Marble also shows which tools it expects to use. The basic idea is that the user should not have to hold the entire structure of the task in their head. And the result should be something directly usable, like a spreadsheet, PowerPoint, or other file, rather than something buried in a transcript.

Marble is our attempt at exploring interaction models beyond the chat box. The product is mainly for people who already use ChatGPT or Claude, but haven’t really adopted agent workflows yet. We’ve found that when the tools and possible actions are made more visible, people start delegating work they would not have thought to do through normal chat.

The site includes a downloadable beta if you want to try it. Does Marble feel like a genuinely novel interface?

When you setup DMARC you need an address to receive reports -- DMARC.quest can do intake, but unlike others an AI agent monitors them intelligently over time, alerting you to real signal over noise.

Yes the UI is still a sloppified mess, but the quality of analysis of the agent is world class, this discovers configuration issues all the time, even in very technically sophisticated companies.
