The hacker ethos and open internet happened when the government was worse. It was illegal to send encryption outside of the US. Hackers used civil disobedience, some risked jail time, some actually went to jail, some are still in jail today or dead, and the world got a bit better as a result of their courage to break laws.

Push back to legislation must be on going and any time it is defeated, the success is only temporary. The government can just line up and try again shortly afterwards and they only needs to successful once.
You can win the battle but lose the war. By the time the average folk realize the extent of these issues it will be way too late.
I think back to how the technology space was 25 years ago. When the biggest privacy fear was that a Pentium 3 had a processor ID and Windows XP would send your system specs to get a security update. Look at how far we have fallen since then and the pace is only speeding up.

Ironically Google is the world's largest advertising and tracking company and literally does everything in their power to trick users into tracking and surveillance. https://x.com/dmitriid/status/1908951546869498085 and https://x.com/dmitriid/status/1664682689591377923
The problem wasn't "Google can't remove third-party cookies", he problem is "too much power in the hands of Google" and "conflicts of interest". From the link you posted below:
--- start quote ---
The investigation concerns Google’s proposals to remove third-party cookies (TPCs) on Chrome and replace TPCs functionality with a range of ‘Privacy Sandbox’ tools, while transferring key functionality to Chrome.
The CMA is particularly interested to hear any views on whether the proposed commitments are sufficient to address the CMA’s competition concerns regarding:
- unequal access to the functionality associated with user tracking
- self-preferencing Google’s own ad tech providers and owned and operated ad inventory
- imposition of unfair terms on Chrome’s web users
--- end quote ---
Spin off your surveillance tech, and there will be no problem. Oh wait...

> As in, billions of trees per year, which is carbon negative only if the net number of trees is growing.
Or if you chop the trees down and use them as building materials. Your hardwood floors and wood wall paneling are also sequestering carbon!

Genetically engineered ultratrees in the Sahara! Of course this would have impacts on rainfall patterns in Europe and South America and might backfire (the large amounts of Saharan dust apparently helps form raindrops and new soil in both places)

End-device security is always important; there would be nothing to stop the compromise and lift of, for example, cookies stored in the browser, or a keylogger to grab passwords.

We are definitely looking to expand beyond the tech/silicon valley scene. We only started in this space because it's the kind of stuff we read, but we're looking into which spaces make the most sense to scale into, and we index new people every day.
Which areas/use-cases would you be interested in seeing?

The Steam Deck is as much Linux as Android is. The reason it will be a better gaming platform is because the users that will buy it will be rich, whereas that is not true generally of Android. This is just my perspective, but it should also inform you why it has no impact on software vendors to make professional software for Android, which makes hundreds of millions of Linux gamers, because an iPad too is a much more expensive device despite lower market share and hence worthwhile to target.

I kinda doubt many Deck owners are planning to do creative work on it, though then again it does have the power of a mid-level laptop …
