And here I was thinking this was proved beyond any reasonable doubt when 4chan users spoofed the Time Magazine person of the year poll of 2009 to spell out "MARBLECAKE, ALSO THE GAME" by the initials of the top winners:

How you remembered it is anecdotal, it's not relevant for the discussion unless you add something of value.

Way back when is not when it broke mainstream. It's when the service started getting attention.

It was literally pitched as a "micro blog site" for techies to communicate news, and the "app" was 160 character SMS messages.

Nerds used it as a free (as in beer) way of sending alert SMS on server errors. (At least I did).

In 2008, twitter had already started to become mainstream, quickly shifting focus away from nerd interests.

Prices went up, yes but not that much to be fair. And I think it mostly affected M2 disks.

Here's my very limited notes on HDD prices.

In 21 october 2023, a 22 TB disk cost me 0.37 SEK per gigabyte.

In 28 may 2026, a 26 TB disk cost me 0.36 SEK per gigabyte.

Both were WD red disks.

FWIW, I blocked the US for a while.

Eventually, my lets encrypt cert expired and it turns out certbot is run from USA, so the auto renewal failed me.

You'll get best compatibility for 20+ year Windows gaming using either

A) qemu with a XP/Vista guest and a older dedicated nvidia gpu pass thru.

B) Fully software using 86box/pcem but performance will suffer.
