Cool article and nice to learn more about the history in Asia. Giant bamboo is great to work with. Myself, an American, and an Argentinian guy build a guadua (word for giant bamboo in Colombia at least) gazebo/shelter as part of a work exchange in Colombia. Fishmouth joints for days, literally. I loved seeing other high rise buildings being built in the area with guadua scaffolding and framing (from what I recall, may be a mix of materials do not remember). There are a lot of academic research articles with giant bamboo building techniques but this is, of course, very geographic dependent.

Can’t really tell if this is tongue in cheek but starting a company doesn’t make one CEO. It makes them a partner/owner but typically CEO needs a board of directors etc

Always thought it was kind of cool how Feynman writes about, when learning calculus and maths as a younger student, would create and use his own symbols for things and how it worked well for him. But kind of realized if he was going to enter the scientific community would need to conform to the standardized notation/symbols for equations etc.

I disagree the diesel crowd doesn’t discuss air/fuel ratios but perhaps I’m misunderstanding something. Sizes and types of turbos, fuel pumps, injector nozzles are frequently discussed. I do agree rolling coal is dumb but most/many daily diesel drivers don’t like it either, have always seen it as kind of a high school thing.

You just take the boat to the travel lift and it hoists out pretty easy. Under 1 or 2 boat bucks for in/out lift, dry storage, and paint if you DIY is reasonable for smaller vessels, like under 30’.

The tough part is scheduling and finding a boatyard if there’s not one close.

There are many metrics and facets of a website considered for SEO, with varying weights. The absence of either a robots.txt or sitemap.xml has a non-negligible but relatively minor weight compared to some other metrics. The files should be present and accurate when optimizing for seo. Ruby on Rails for example creates an empty robots.txt file with new projects, it does not create any sitemap.xml however.

Ask HN: What ways are business dba (doing business as) names used?

This isn't a "how do I do it" question - it's more looking for experience, personal or professional, on how you've seen dba's being used. I'm personally interested in analogues/how other countries handle this but believe the location/scope to be USA-specific. To explain the question, it seems like a dba can serve different functional purposes:

For example, a business formed under the name "Acme Coder LLC" may claim and utilize the dba "Acme Coder" just so they can drop LLC for signage/ads etc.

But a dba can also be used for industry-purpose naming, e.g. "Acme Coder LLC" wants to diversify and offer design services so they register and utilize the dba "Acme Coder and Designer".

As I understand it there is no limit to the number of dba's a business can register and utilize. In theory, there's nothing stopping, "Acme Coder LLC" from also registering and utilizing "Acme Pizzeria".

So just curious if there are any interesting or notable usages of dbas anyone has. Or if a dba is purposed to offer a new product etc.

This question is just coming from an angle of personal and professional curiosity. A current tech example of how this topic comes up may be the company that sells the Rabbit r1 - believe coffeezilla mentioned something like the company was previously named and operated-as a crypto company before pivoting.

Finally, it seems reasonable an entrepreneur would establish "Acme Parent Company LLC" as a main business and pursue different ventures through dba's such as "Acme Venture" and "Acme Venture 2" - is this actually done?

Ask HN: Social Media Importance for SEO?

I'm a software dev with prior experience working on SEO for a large international company. I now own and operate a local service business. I don't use social media personally or professionally.

Do you have informed opinions on the importance of Social Media "integrations" on a website and how they correlate to SEO? On all SEO analysis tools I've seen there are checks for social media links and even, specifically, Google analytics.

My business website typically "scores" slightly above average for technical SEO and CWV - which is the primary goal. But is intentionally lacking social media links and Google analytics. Cookieless analytics are used, via Goatcounter (not a plug necessarily but I discovered the service from a HN post and am very happy with it!).

I understand SEO is somewhat opaque and there are many factors contributing to rankings etc. I would like to avoid social media links and hardcore tracking analytics but am always reminded these are missing when running SEO analysis tools.

Just throwing it out there to get some opinions and thoughts. My current thinking is it's not a big deal either way, especially for a local service business where word-of-mouth is a more powerful driver of traffic. I would like the business and website to earn higher search engine rankings but am also wary of integrating social media, tracking, etc.
