This YouTuber is very knowledgeable, this video in particular was very good to follow along and take in what he says. Usually, I can barely watch any of his videos when they popup as recommend because his humor and way of behaving feels directed towards kids to entertain. So I avoid his channel. This time, I actually enjoyed the video. I wish he continued with this style instead.
Another point I would like to bring up is this, I do not believe the idea of ”solving coding” is appropriate. I do not see these agents as replacement for our crafts, but rather, as a assistive tool for us. Its an extension of us. If you are at the beginner stage of something, and have a wrong approach for something, the agent amplify that issue (a bit of prompting can help mitigate this for beginners ofc, for example the agent can act as a teaching instructor).
I feel like some people don’t know how good Claude Code (the harness) is at general tasks as well, not just coding. It have helped me troubleshoot a lot of issues in a variety of environments, from things in the local machine to external services to the web. It has truly shortened my time of sitting stuck infront of the desktop, starring at the screen while out of ideas.

I suggest to not look at how each company is expressing themselves on the media, look at how they are actually behaving. When I first tried out Z.ai last year, I too was concerned regarding where my data goes. I vaguely remember from their ToS (please verify yourself too) that they followed a zero data retention policy for its AI services. This of course applied to their paying customers. I do not know if it applies to their free users on chat.z.ai. I am at the stage of not caring about geopolitics at all, I've lost a lot of trust in the current US administration, they have burned a lot of international relationships thanks to the orange man. This is while Chinese companies and startups have almost closed the gap between open-weight models and proprietary models. Its thanks to their actions and open contribution in the research I can run local models at home. Just read the tweet posted and see where Z.ai is trying to position themselves, this competition benefits us (consumers) a lot!

I used GLM-5.1 when I had the coding plan. Its performance would degrade over time after about 200k tokens. I was suspicious of its recall capability not being that good for long horizon tasks that stress tests the context window. But as they expressed in the tweet:
> It not only supports a truly usable 1M context window but also maintains a continuous lead in the independent completion of long-horizon tasks, providing solid foundational support for building complex agent applications.
Sounds like they have addressed this issue.

> Remember the days of MySQL Workbench and how clunky it was
I loved MySQL Workbench, but it had its faults. Is there any equivalent alternative today? I've dreamed about an app that fuses MySQL Workbench + real-time collaboration, so I can share the same workspace with others in the team and see what others are are up to and collaborate on things.

I liked Matlab, I was so used to it. Then I switched job, which meant I could not keep the company license for it. At that point, I realized what proprietary, vendor lock-in meant. The Matlab snippets I had was now unusable to me, until I bought a license myself. I tried GNU Octave, but it felt half-baked.

Thank you for the insights, this sounds like an environment I want to partake.
> Reading developer forums in China, once you crack the code (I find Gemini will get you a good chunk of the way with good translations), they are really quite far ahead with what they're willing to share.
Are you able to share those forums and other resources? I would love to read what people in these communities are sharing.

> Looks like they have very effective collaboration with DeepSeek and Kimi. Those three models have been bouncing ideas and sharing R&D innovation, which made all of them improve very fast.
Very fascinating to learn this, didn't know Moonshoot (Kimi) also collaborated with others. I think I read in another post that DeepSeek and Qwen team shared the same building? So that kind of explains it.
> Based solely on quality and price, OpenAI, Anthropic, and other western models just can't compete with the new generation of Chinese open models.
I have to agree. I had the great opportunity to take the offer Z.ai had with their Christmas deal, their lite plan was 3 months for 7$. GLM-4.7 was already impressive enough.
When they released GLM-5-Turbo and GLM-5.1, that is when I came to the realization of how close the gap is between proprietary western models and Chinese open-weight ones (not all of them are ofc).
I could barely believe how good GLM-5.1 was, I didn't think I was using it in CC and had to check the settings again. It's astonishing how close the gap is now, and this competition benefits us very much, the pricing is so low atm, its amazing.
