Yeah, Java works. You have to sneak up on Kotlin to make it do anything. Also, when you have questions, the java community is a lot better. The Kotlin community is made up of the same tweed jacket wearing losers that were doing rails back in the day.

Ask HN: "From Scratch” Robotics Resources?

I've been trying to start from the beginning and learn some robotics skills. I have a degree in computing science, so it isn't completely alien to me... but some of the concepts are things I would be rusty on, since I've been doing software for ten years now. I looked at various sites, but a lot of the tutorials are just aimed at making you by various little robot kits. That isn't what I'm looking for. I was to follow material that based on individual components, and do a from scratch build.

There isn't really that much good content anymore... So it really is easy nowadays. A few years ago I used to constantly have to be saving stuff to read later... but now it is constantly just non-tech related crap, unfortunately.

I watched this happen the other day. Swat team arrived arrived at my friend's apartment complex in Austin. Turns out there was an armed meth dealer holed up next door. SWAT sent a robot in to scope the situation, find him, and then knew where in the apartment he was, so as to work out the safest entry point for the team. Was fascinating!

Yep. Work hard for 5 more years, go back to my home country and open a café where I can meet people who are less predictable than the people I am surrounded by in tech. I am studying as much as I can in my free time on the topic of coffee, and my counterpart involved is doing the same regarding cuisine :)
