I learned English when I was a child because all the media I wanted to consume were not translated into Dutch.

Makes you wonder if universal translators ever become the norm people will still bother to learn foreign language.

NYC has a better subway system than most Euro cities. Probably because NYC has the advantage of being old before cars became affordable.

For a few decades it seemed planners all over the world really had this crazy idea that everyone would just drive around for everything. Just put 10 lane highways straight through your town!

The Netherlands has Caribbean islands off the coast of Venezuela. If the US blows up a bunch of fishermen by accident it would be awkward. You can actually sue the Dutch government for this kind of thing and win.

The Trabant was a normal car if you look at what the rest of Europe was driving at the time. In fact the DDR did not economically collapse until the late 1970s.

Ofcourse the real problem was they could not actually make enough of them. You could go to a Citroen dealer and pick up a 2CV the same day.

Because contrary to what tourists think Amsterdam is not a theme park. Normal people live and work there.

When tourists come home drunk at four in the morning they wake up families who have to get up at 7 to go to work and school. There is a reason why we seperate tourists in hotels.

AIRBNB stopped catering to digital nomads and went straight into the hotel business.

People have different ideas about life. If you can get a 9-5 job that pays the bills why join the military and be deployed overseas for months on end not being a part of your family?

The civilian sector has the same problem with truck drivers and maritime shipping.
