Since it's a reconciliation bill, is this likely to make it past the "Byrd bath"? It's looped in with a $500M AI modernization fund but my simplified understanding is that items not related to budget can be challenged and removed. Couldn't find reference to this in any of a few news articles.

At the unveiling it was promised to start at $39,900, just under $50k in today's dollars.
Yes, that was for a base model that wasn't produced, but we are a long way from the promised stats on the upper trim. Promised to be under $70k, or about $87k in today's dollars (nope), 500+ mi range (nope, 300), payload 3500lbs (nope, 2500), tow rating 14000 (nope, 11000). By 2021 (nope).
It does come close on two of the promised stats: 0-60 in under 3 seconds and top speed just under the promised 130. I'd much rather have it be good at being a truck than being a massive hunk of pointy steel that can be thrown around with that much torque.

yes, the headline is getting ahead of things without the context of the trial. It is not correct -- at least not yet -- that Google "will have to break up its business." This is a DOJ filing for the remedies trial happening this month and/or next. Also correct that Google gets to propose its own remedies.
https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/public-policy/googl...
Judge Mehta has suggested he'll issue a verdict by August. Then either side can appeal. There is still a lot of legal road ahead.
Wildly speculating, I'm curious if the current Supreme Court would want to set precedent around the interpretation of antitrust law w.r.t. the consumer welfare standard, and whether there's anything in this judgement that would let them do so.
edit: readability

If Alphabet/Waymo leadership were more theatrical... I wonder if the Tesla event delay could have given them time to expand 3 miles up the 101, across the Cahuenga Pass, so they could offer fully-autonomous Waymo rides through LA traffic to and from Musk's WB lot Tesla demo.
though it's not at all their style. And realistically I'm glad they're being methodical and prioritizing safety.

Yes, the multi-year discount and perpetual license are nice -- though the version is the one from the start of the year but that's certainly better than a lot of peers.
I was impressed that when Jetbrains raised prices, it seemed a reasonable amount, they gave a few months' notice, and allowed people to prepurchase three years in advance at the old rates.
I'm hoping IDEA and the all products pack continue to survive basically as-is. Jetbrains looks to have launched a couple overlapping enterprise SaaS products, the AI integration, and increasingly specialized individual IDEs.

Variation on "have seen" - a couple examples of historically expensive software that became accessible:
Over time DaVinci Resolve went from a hardware-software system costing $X00,000 to having a software-only version for $1500 in today's dollars to having two tiers, a free version and $295 "studio" version that is also bundled in with BlackMagic hardware and cameras.
($800,000 to Zero - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WvP5_HFQSk)
I suppose a half-million-dollar hybrid system might not be off the shelf. For things individual users could actually (edit: realistically) buy, the perpetual Adobe Collection license was $3k in today-money.
For Mac users, Final Cut Pro Studio 1 was $1299 and Logic Studio used to be $999, plus paid major version upgrades; probably multiply by 1.5x for inflation; now they're $299 and $199, or IIRC $299 together in a bundle for students, and they've each received free updates for a decade.

there are many stats from many sources, probably with varying accuracy. And please keep in mind since it's financial, many of them will be trying to sell you things.
There's also a difference between retirement savings and net worth. I'd guess there was a jump in "house poor" millionaires over the last few years.
The Fed has a Survey of Consumer Finances which can graph net worth broken down by perentile. You're right that even $1M net worth is not the majority, but top 25%ile:
https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/scfindex.htm?mod=arti...
https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/scf/dataviz/scf/chart...
Probably more millionaires in the last few years with inflation though.
This is all US-centric; the author, Richard, is in Japan; I'm not sure how net worth, savings, retirement, or taxes are in Japan.
