I wrote other scripts, compiled personal eval sets, and subscribed (then unsubscribed) to a bunch of online tools. Nothing seemed right.

Until last Friday when, talking about side project ideas with my girlfriend, she said, “What if it was in your code editor?”

And I thought, wow, I love this woman.

This VSCode extension instead lets you highlight your prompt text and run it against any and all models [2]. You can toss in your API keys, which are only stored locally, and use it for free.

Any feedback would be invaluable - this is my first extension!

I’ll be adding the same highlighting functionality I have for prompts to schema validation, where you can highlight any form of schema (pydantic, zod, json), and I’ll use a small llm to parse it + format it for different providers.

In my experiments with prompt engineering, I ran into a problem: most prompts I'm designing can't be quantitatively tested because they don't have a right/wrong answer (eg. providing essay feedback, deciphering corporate-speak in meeting minutes). That means I can't run evals, super powerful tools like ChainForge[1] are too high-overhead, and running one prompt at a time in ChatGPT... sucks.

I built Prompt Octopus[2] to evaluate as many prompts as I want, side by side, and it's sped up my workflow dramatically. You can plug in an API key online or self-host (I added python + node.js boilerplates in the repo). Click the Octopus icon in the top right to change your model type, see your history, and change the number of prompt-response boxes you're working with. I'm open sourcing it here and want your feedback, both on the UX and the self-hosting experience!

This week I hope to add diff checking, batch API calls to speed things up, and options to add more LLMs.

A few of these definitely get it right, but most of the animation-heavy ones load slow on my phone.

Also, do you plan to offer a version of this for teenagers? I noticed the youngest age range is 20.

Even if you're a researcher, good quality data rarely exists. In NYC, which collects more data than any other school district, you're mostly relying on a (publicly available) 100 question survey sent to every student. The survey author must have never talked to a child because the questions are worded like a clinical psychology paper. At low income schools the survey has a 20-30% response rate.[2]
