> Dubai isn't a country. It's a city in the United Arab Emirates.

I learned recently that Dubai is also the name of the emirate. I don’t have a good understanding of the UAE governmental structure, but the Emirates do seem to have their own governments. Maybe it can be thought of as a country in the same way Scotland can be thought of as a country.

I find it mildly amusing that fully metric countries are seemingly stuck with some standardized measurements based on imperial units. Like how a soccer/football goal is 8 feet x 24 feet / 7.32 m x 2.44 m. Or how a standard shipping conatiner is 40 feet x 8 feet x 8 feet 6 inches/ 12.192 m x 2.438 m x 2.591 m. Or standard gague railways being 4 feet 8.5 inches / 1.435 m.

New comment by CDRdude in "Police officer investigated for using AI to 'create evidence' in multiple cases"

CDRdude — Sun, 14 Jun 2026 02:54:32 +0000

If a fictional-but-popular TV show treats some kinds of evidence as more reliable than they really are, juries may be primed to believe in the kind of thing the TV show presents as legitimate.

New comment by CDRdude in "Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM"

CDRdude — Wed, 10 Jun 2026 21:00:04 +0000

I think legacy USB peripherals are very common. Almost all of my peripherals are legacy USB; I think I only own a single USB-C peripheral. Old stuff still works, so I don't need to buy new ones.

You absolutely can start a bike by pedaling with no forward momentum. You can see it when someone starts pedaling again after a track stand.

I'm using an iphone 13, although I prefer to turn sideways and browse in landscape mode. What you consider borderline unusable is just how I prefer to browse reddit.

Isn’t it somewhat likely that a lot of shady crawlers pretend to be a google bot with their user agent?

It probably still is. I have a bit below 500 points and I can’t downvote.

New comment by CDRdude in "Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes"

CDRdude — Sat, 03 Jan 2026 17:59:26 +0000

Maduro was reported winning with 5,150,092 votes, or 51.20000% of the vote, and the main opposition had 44.20000% of the vote. These are considered suspiciously round percentages.

“Many people pirate” is a different statement than “too many people pirate games to make that a viable business”.

A justification I read once is that the human immune system evolved to deal with a certain amount of pathogens. If you don’t have enough exposure to pathogens, the immune system still tries to do its job, but winds up attacking non-pathogens.

Analogies don’t have to be 100% perfect. The Confederate analogy gets the point across just fine.

New comment by CDRdude in "Bankruptcy judge rejects sale of Infowars to The Onion"

CDRdude — Wed, 11 Dec 2024 20:59:24 +0000

The article suggests that this is is a first price sealed bid auction instead of a second price sealed bid auction. Skipping over the more complex nature of the Onion bid, the linked articles states "The total value of The Onion’s bid was $7 million" and "First United American Companies had a higher bid, offering $3.5 million in cash".

New comment by CDRdude in "I organized a 20-acre game of Capture the Flag"

CDRdude — Sun, 19 May 2024 00:04:35 +0000

I think there is a very good chance this game was played at night when there would be few or no people in the park. They do not mention time of day in the post, but most urban capture the flag games are played at night.
