This wouldn't happen to be in San Diego County, would it? I interviewed at a place a while back where every desk had friggen 1080p televisions on it. Classic case of the owner having some genius idea to save money.

At the start of my career I was being paid for the code I wrote.

By the end of my career I was being paid for the code I didn't have to write.

One of the nicest complements I ever got from a coworker was that he was astonished how much I accomplished with so little code. Everything I built was designed to be easily and quickly extensible with minimal changes, I planned my structure for future needs.

That is why high paid programmers have been in demand, because learning that takes more than intelligence, it takes wisdom.

jfc, please no, I already have to use too many apps that don't give any feedback while they are waiting for a request to finish. I am so sick of systems that don't account for request latency, especially on mobile.

The purpose of the throbber is to tell the user that their tap landed on the right place and the app is actually doing something.

I'm 45. I caught asymptomatic coronavirus in 2024 and developed Long COVID, burned out hard from my role as a Principal Engineer.

We got lucky and just happened to inherit my in-laws estate the very week that I was let go in my company's third round of layoffs. Spouse and I decided it was best to take some time away from tech and see what happens from the AI bubble.

Two years later, I'm ready to work again, but the jobs aren't there. Everything I read and everyone I talk to says that even if they were, I would probably hate the work anyway (I can't stand LLMs or the code they produce).

So I guess I'm retired now.

That useState hook doesn't work the way you think it does. It's going to reset state every time the hook is invoked on rerender. It also isn't triggering a render, which is the entire point of the hook.

I have to wonder if growing grid battery storage systems for solar have made it easier to automate this. The reason they need to predict it is because turbine based generation has a spin up time, but batteries are instant.

While reading the Jelly-UI source I learned that you can use slot tags to effectively punch holes in the shadowdom on a web component. The elements passed in as component children can be assigned to a slot[1] within the component's shadowdom, and the external styles on them continue untouched.

Inheritance tax in the US currently doesn't kick in unless the estate is worth more than 12 million dollars.
