You can just rent them an email account anyname@surname.com, I suspect that's what most people want anyways (especially non-techies).

Ask HN: Forcing browser updates on users

I was about to download Wunderlist on a new computer and upon visiting their website, I was notified that Firefox is out of date. I couldn't access anything else on the site without updating.

This got me thinking- forcing the latest browser version could make things a lot easier in terms of cross browser compatibility, but it could annoy some users. Perhaps I have some extensions that are not compatible with the latest updates, so I don't want to be forced into updating.

Then again, a simple notification could be fine, leaving the choice to update up to the user.

What do you think of this practice?

What are some of the things you do to minimize the number of browsers you need to support?

Good question. I've used it for years and always assumed it works. If Google bots can execute javascript, spammers can probably do it too. My only hope is they don't want to do it because it's resource intensive.

Your like/tweet counter is serving as negative social proof. Get rid of the counter until you build up some likes.

Do that by getting businesses to PAY you (even if it's not finished yet). Sometimes people say that they would like a solution for X, but when it comes to paying for it they back out.

I delete everything but emails that require a response.

If all the email needs is a response, I do that right away and delete the email immediately.

If I need to do something before replying, I keep it.

This pretty much leaves only the stuff I need to do in the inbox. Also never enable automatic deletion after a certain time, so it's possible to look up old emails.

As long as your expectations are not utterly unrealistic, lowering them won't motivate you to do anything about it.

It helps if you know where you want to go, and you're doing something to get there.

Get rid of the background that randomly changes color. Get rid of the moving screenshots. Anything that's randomly moving is distracting viewers from your message.

Change the headline to explain what it does.

Change the subhead to elaborate on it's benefits.

Tell me what the features are, instead of an adjective, which really doesn't explain anything.

Overall, it needs way more copy to explain exactly what the app does and why people should buy it.

On the signup page do you really need a username? You could use the email as username. Also password confirmation might not be essential. Change call to action to something like "Sign up now ->" instead of "Send activation".

Look for someone who's a hustler. Someone who's not afraid to pick up the phone and do cold calls.

Alternatively, find someone who can write good copy. You don't necessarily need the person to be tech savvy as that's already covered.

From my experience you can get a lot more mileage from a copywriter. Your website, your UI, your blog, your emails, your lost password reminder, even social media - all of it can benefit greatly from good copy.

"If my team can build it, I know I can market it." Come up with something that solves a problem and is easier to build. Then use your skills to market it better than the competition. Many business tasks can be simplified with nothing more than a simple database app.

I would go with a static homepage instead of the slider. And make the headline more meaningful. Ultimately your visitors aren't interested in creating an account. Instead, they probably want an easy way to rent an apartment (if I'm not mistaken).
