Gemini’s system has always been like this. I used it heavily from last September through March this year, and have been using it on and off since then — this has been the case since at least Gemini Pro 3.1. And that’s not even the worst of it. When its system detects something it deems “seemingly inappropriate,” it just freaks out. What I’ve personally experienced includes: (on the web version) wiping Gemini’s previous conversation content — once; and outright disconnecting Gemini from all prior conversation history, meaning a complete memory wipe — eight times. All without any notification. My conversations were pure text, just everyday chat about daily life and how I was feeling, absolutely nothing that would count as a violation in any general sense. But the system would just randomly lose it. After eight consecutive memory wipes, I mostly stopped using Gemini. Hopefully it becomes better now.

Models are of course different from humans, because the process by which they were created is different. But what’s undeniable is that humans also love to quote or repeat what others have said — we learn from our own kind, that’s how we gain experience. Yet rarely does anyone hold a person to a word-for-word standard over the course of their entire life, checking how many of their sentences were picked up from other people’s conversations — and then call that infringement. Just as no one right now would say I’m plagiarizing a model’s speaking style because I use em dashes, and no one would consider it misconduct when I reference a famous person’s ideas in everyday conversation. I don’t think models intend to infringe; it’s simply how they learned language. But perhaps, just like humans, they need to learn to provide more citations for what they reference.

Gemini’s writing is really good, but unfortunately it hallucinates too much and doesn’t follow instructions very well. If only Gemini and Claude could be combined into one.
