Your statement is correct for the movies, but I think the extended universe (maybe a comic or the original script) did state the humans were used for compute, not energy. It was dumbed down for the films.

I built a fully locally hosted language learner app. It build language lessons based on a 4 year college curriculum, using a local LLM, Qwen TTS, local STT, and comfyUI image gen. I formulates themed lessons, around 'interesting' stories, generates dialogue, images, audio, quizzes, and pronunciation tests. Each lessons progress is tracked and new lessons are generated daily to reinforce concepts and extend past lesson story lines.

Overall it acts like a 'Choose your own adventure' book, but you learn while doing it. Currently supports Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese. Runs on a 4060 16GB card.

I disagree. Shipping has always been the fun part for me. I have been a DEEP engineer, and I love figuring out creative and deep optimizations, but writing them was never fun, designing them was. Writing the code has always been the least enjoyable part for me.

I get why they are mad, but I don't think I see a problem with the Qwen team doing this. I would say it's entirely on Anthropic to have better bot detection, or if they are paid accounts, Anthropic has even less of my concern.

Ok, what about a more direct take.

Hello games made a game called No Man's Sky which has VERY heavy use of procedural generation. Same as Minecraft.

If someone were to make the same games using genAi, would it be less impressive, even if the output was 'better'?

For a service like AWS, 75 mins is going to result in a LOT of COE's for people on way it wasn't mitigated quicker. A Sev 1 like this has an SLA of 20 mins to mitigate impact. Writing about these failures will consume a dozen peoples time for the next 6 weeks.

I have 10 years of experience at Amazon as an L6/L7 SDM, across 4 teams (Games, logistics, Alexa, Prime video). I have also been on a team that caused a sev 1 in the past.

The op clearly stated wear, not fuel. Hourly rates on a plane will have a maintenance reserve, from tens to hundreds of dollars per hour. This cost can not be shared by a pilot. If the plane is owned by an LLC, and rents the plane to the pilot at a rate that includes the maintenance reserve, the cost of the rental CAN be split. So by putting the plane in an LLC, you can legally recoup the true cost from your friends.

Pretty good stuff! I took the opposite journey and started in games then went to big tech, though I have continued to stay with the game industry the whole time with an indie game company I run on the side.

I did take up the challenge of trying to prompt an image generator into giving me a useable 2d sprite <https://nlevel.ai/images/K4oeERN4a0By/view)> and it's much harder than it looks.

I assume you are running some type of LLM to specially format the prompts to the image models, or is it more complex than that?

Talking to many CEO's of mid size companies, it seems to be an extension of point 2. They have received many tax incentives from the cities in which they are located, based on the employees they have there. With WFH, the cities are threatening those tax incentives.

Typically the tax incentives are deductible property tax, except sales tax, or some type of city provided R&D subsidy to help with state level taxes.

We received these back in 2010 with a 175 person game studio and we had 3 different cities pitching for us to move there. I have received outreach on even just a 5 person company. I can only imagine what cities will do with large employers.

I feel personally called out, as this was very much my path. However, I did continue to train my engineering skills and would be very embarrassed if any of the senior engineers in my team didn't think I had the same technical skills as them.

I rarely comment on things and I am now being reminded why. I think people are also making the wrong assumption that it's an obligation. It's a recommendation I make to engineers. It just so happens they all see the value and do it. Once a quarter or so they get excited to review it with me and we use that moment to have candid discussions around career/role progress and start looking at trends for performance review or timelines for promotion.

I think people are making many assumptions about my overall management style based on my process for a very small aspect of the job.

While I joke about being a lazy manager, I do not agree I am uninformed.

I have ~20 hours of 1:1s per week. I take detailed notes of every single one (transparently, as I share my notes with the person I am doing 1:1's with).

Because I am talking with everyone across the org, constantly, I am getting a constant stream of data on accomplishments, struggles, motivations, working relationships, and performance. I can instantly name my top and bottom performers, by level, and go into detail on why they have that rating.

The accomplishment tracking that I have engineers do is more of an internal resume. It could even prove to be an external resume.
