Disagree. The word "native" in a software execution context has a very specific meaning—it means that the software is running on the target hardware with no emulation, translation layer or modification by any middleware. Games running through Proton/WINE will never be native, by definition.

HN (and Reddit) are not social media, they are forums. Social media are platforms where the main purpose is to socialise. Forums are platforms where the main purpose is to discuss the topic of any given thread. Just because you can talk to someone, doesn't make it social media. I will die on this hill.

If I ran it with just

    $ chmod +x snake.com
    $ ./snake.com

... then it would try to use Mono to launch it:

    Cannot open assembly './snake.com': File does not contain a valid CIL image.

But, running it explicitly with Bash works:

    $ bash snake.com

Pretty nifty but doesn't work out of the box on any Linux, at least :p Running Debian 13.

This is easily solvable by distributing the app via a distro agnostic mechanism, like as a Flatpak or AppImage. Using Flatpak also eliminates the need for rolling their own app update mechanism.

The `Memory Pit` exploit for the Nintendo DSi works in a similar way - it exploits a buffer overflow in the reading of image meta data by the Nintendo DSi Camera application in order to achieve arbitrary code execution.
