I think you're looking at the wrong end of the spectrum there. It's some of the biggest players who flaunt the rules.

It matters, in the sense that other people (some of them with control of a great deal of wealth and force) believe it, and make decisions based on it.

I'm confident there were plenty of citizens of the Soviet Union who knew that Lysenko was decoupled from reality. That didn't stop them from starving to death.

Coverage of this war is by far the least informative of any such conflict in my lifetime. The linked report has no context. Trying to piece things together, it appears the sequence of events leading to the current Iranian attacks on the UAE was:

1) UAE flagged tanker(s) attempt to pass the Iranian blockade.

2) Iran fires on the UAE tanker(s) from small craft.

3) U.S. fires on Iranian small craft.

4) Iran launches attacks on the UAE.

There may have been additional attacks somewhere in that sequence, but that's the best picture I can make out.

The presumes that "Trump Administration" and "United States of America" are the same thing. The reality is that a Venn diagram of them would be two circles that barely touch. Is it really an "own goal" if you gravely injure your victim while you rob them?
