Uncommon as they may be, I imagine getting a divorce is currently a complicated, expensive process, even if the couple are in agreement about terms. Sounds like a good pain point to solve, though I have reservations about trying to automate complex legal, financial and emotional decisions like this.

`:;' is not the best string to use to identify shellshock exploit attempts, as the contents of the function are ignored and can change.

Searching for `() {' _should_ (and I'm happy to be corrected here) find most attempts at exploiting, since that's the key sequence that triggers bash's "parse this environment variable as a function" behaviour.

In bash, that's referred to as process substitution[1]; the syntax is only slightly different:

    <(command)

Edit to add: both ksh and zsh support process substitution, too:

    ksh: <(command)
    zsh: either =(command) -- uses a temporary file
             or <(command) -- uses a named pipe

Are you guaranteeing that those files are in a good state when you ship them off? (i.e., flushed and synced to disk)

How about the DBs? Are you backing up the *SQL data files directly (and if so, are you guaranteeing that _those_ are in a good state?), or doing an SQL or other export?

Exactly which files do you need to backup -- user generated content, system configuration, logs, spool files? Do those files give you enough information to rebuild your machine(s) from bare metal? Or have you have documented your setup procedures?

Where are you storing these backups? And how many copies of them, and on what frequency, should you be keeping?

Are you testing your backups? Are you testing your recovery procedures? If not, how do you _know_ they're all working?

Sorry for the question dump, but there is a fair bit more to even basic backups than just syncing your filesystem to S3 / tarsnap / The Cloud TM every day.

The Citadel groupware suite[1] provides provides KVM and VMWare images[2] that could easily be imported into EC2. Found it as part of my own research into reducing my reliance on Gmail and other hosted services, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
