At a certain point the roughness of the ball reaches a size threshold where the imperfections are smaller than the wavelength of light, and the surface takes on a glassy smoothness. Intelligence has similar milestones, almost like phase changes, I think, where capabilities are reached. Maybe it's like a superposition of many small step functions.

I hear the word "stepper" used sometimes talking about lithography machines. Makes sense I suppose that you'd need to precisely move the wafer around and expose small parts of it.

The article actually is about botany, but the title reminded me there is a whole area that could be called "criminal botany". As in, there are specific plants cultivated for illegal purposes. And on the other side, forensic botany (things like analysing pollen traces)

This is one reason LLMs seem so fresh and nice, there are no ads. Agreed it's just a matter of time.
