Their 'right' to do that was probably somewhere in unreadable ALL CAPS on a small piece of paper at the bottom of the shipping box that the end user never got.
Fuck 'em. Isolate your local net from the world and only let through devices you trust. Plenty of ways to do that, even at low expense. But you will have to make the effort or pay someone else to do it.

I live in Georgia, and the only thing this plant will do is raise our rates.
It's late (of course) and HUGELY over budget (also of course). The planners always knew it would be way late and way over budget. None of that mattered, because the 'regulatory' system guarantees they get it all back (and more) from the rate payers.
It was also painfully obvious WHEN THIS WAS PLANNED that building Solar and/or Wind would get done sooner and far less expensively.

The HDD may be having to retry reads on weak/bad sectors. Run Steve Gibson's SpinRight on it. It spots sectors that are having problems but not yet totally failed, and tells the controller to swap them out for spares (which is what the controller would do when they completely failed.)
It also works on SSDs, and yes, SSDs have the same problem because the drive controllers were not written from scratch.
(No affiliation here. It's just a tool I use because it works.)

Why do people keep falling for this? This same fraud used to pop up only every 10 years. Now it's 5 or less.
I'm a PhD chemist. Please consider this: While plastics and oil are both hydrocarbons they have this important difference. Liquid hydrocarbons have short carbon chains and lots of hydrogen. Plastics have very LONG carbon chains, usually with many double bonds, and very little hydrogen.
That is why, when you heat plastic it decomposes into char -- as in charcoal. It is IMPOSSIBLE to produce oil, even theoretically, without adding a source of hydrogen.
A few centuries ago these same fraudsters would be selling you a way to change Iron into Gold.

Lousy article. For example, the author complains about a supposed 'lesson learned' that says (shortened) "If so-and-so happens it may be because of A, or it may be because of B". His complaint is "except that it may be because of C or D".
But the 'lesson' he presented never claimed to be an exclusive either-or.
It just says "here are two possible explanations for something".
There's sloppy thinking like this throughout. Thumbs down for me.

(With a number of !s appropriate to the publishing venue.)
What's the name for the slash marks sometimes found on suicide victims, where they tried to cut their own throat or wrists several times before they succeed? Hesitation marks? Maybe that's what we're seeing here. /facetious

I think of these as a "Star Trek" test. You know: Wesley is confronted with "his deepest fear" during entrance exams for Star Fleet, Counselor Troi can't pass a holodeck test for "command responsibilities" until she's willing to order Jordi to do a suicide repair. I'm sure there were others.
The common theme is supposed to be that the obvious test is a fake and they're really testing for something else.
 They're all bullshit.
Every single one of them falls apart as soon as people start talking about them with each other, not to mention they're just begging to be abused by the testing authority, or entice corruption.
