Also a product of the mentality that you get ahead in your career by adding new features, not by maintaining existing features. Maintenance is boring and the new kids straight out of college don't want to do the boring thing.

Not only that, but the young have to support the old in their retirement. This becomes a huge problem when there are multiple elderly per young person and the young find that they are spending most of their time and effort supporting the aging population. The elderly start being seen as a burden on society.

Yeah, the US is big. Movies and TV shows usually only show like 2 or 3 cities which makes everything seem like it's close together. For instance I live on the east coast, and I've never been to LA California, which might seem weird but it's over 2500 miles away. Different regions have basically different sub-cultures that emerge because we're so spread out.

I remember when Second Life was new and touted as "The Future". Gamers jumped into it but many left because there was simply nothing to do unless you were a creative type who had the skill to create and sell items in the 'game'. I'm guessing today it's just creative people hanging out with creative people, which is probably a fun experience for them, but not something that will appeal to a wide audience.

I've heard 3 different versions of this story now.
1. Gary was out joyriding in his plane and when the reps from IBM showed up, his wife turned them down because she didn't feel like she had the authority to continue negotiating without him
2. IBM reps showed up, but it was Gary's wife's birthday, and so he told them he would need to reschedule
3. This version
I wonder if we will ever really know what took place that day.

Surprised the author didn't bring up the corporate mentality of having to justify having (sometimes) large office buildings, cafeterias, etc that make their campuses look impressive but are a massive cost sink if nobody is utilizing them. You can say "just get rid of the buildings" but then (thinking of tech companies) they won't APPEAR to be as big or popular as other tech companies.

Cable TV didn't have ads when it started, and then started adding advertisements once they realized they could get away with it. That's when you ended up with HBO, which was an additional cost above standard cable TV. Corporations are never "content", but always require more and more income.

"Gentle Parenting" is another instance. It could mean that you set boundaries but are more cautious about how you give punishments, attempting to fit the punishment to the bad deed. Or it could mean that you let the child do whatever they want and give them everything, teaching them that there are no negative consequences to their actions and that others are there to serve them.

As a small cog in a large corporate machine, I get this. You just keep spinning and spinning, seemingly doing the same kinds of projects and the same work over and over again, often with no understanding of where the projects are coming from or whether or not the hard work you're putting in has any real value. And then there's constant changing and revisions and sometimes the project gets dropped, which is a clear indication that your hard work was basically wasted by higher ups who seem to have no understanding of the work that has to go into the projects.
I get paid though, so I'll keep spinning and find my value as a human outside of work.

A lot of startup-minded engineers are younger, fresh out of college with the single goal of excelling in their field. They work and work until one day they finally get tired of the grind and/or find life and responsibilities outside of work. You also have the workaholics, but that's another issue.
