I disagree with this, I work in the same field and I left a startup for the exact same reason of what you're proposing. There are a subset of founders probably like these folks and myself who would rather not build anything at all then continue to create BAU and raise money/build a product with the intention of 'one day maybe we'll make it sustainable'. How about RIGHT NOW, how about building things FROM THE GET GO based on deep principles that what you introduce from the start is already more beneficial for the planet. And I doubt they're greenwashing because there are several 3rd party verified certifications that can attest to whatever theyre producing is what they say it is, and then it becomes a matter of which certification.

Thanks for sharing, i agree no one should have absolute control of anything imo, and the mo greater the magnitude of implications the more important it should be stewarded democratically with clear and transparent principles with values adhering to things like human dignity, freedom, human, planetary & animal wellbeing etc etc. ill have to read the article

It was using genetically modified bacteria via industrial fermentation. It's essentially a specialty chemical used in pharma, automotive, paints & adhesives and theoretically for biodegradable plastics but unfortunately PHB (the plastic you can make out of it) doesn't have great properties. All in all, the 3HB market was pretty small with tight supply chains and not a huge amount of growth. I'm sure you guys will have more success depending on your outputs.

THiS! I'm pretty amazed how many people shoot them down without acknowledging the very real and somewhat probable risks they and other researchers have laid out. I don't agree with every point they make but folks really do just seem to think we should just keep building any technology and whine when we start to consider there are very real risks associated with powerful technology. checks notes see nuclear bombing of japan

Congrats! I've worked on a similar technology converting waste syngas to 3-hydroxy-butyrate for further applications. Unfortunately in my case, we couldn't see any valuable and scalable end products from that particular molecule but I'm excited to follow your journey. Best of luck!

What about the extremism causing all of this, three years ago we didn't have folks with legal right to work here being executed in the street, separated from their families, deported right after getting out of a hospital for life threatening illnesses... politicians calling other people subhuman, animals, all criminals.. odd you dont mention THAT extremism.

Noted — and I did wish the founder success. I have no personal ill will towards them. But what I'd ask HN to consider is this: our world, and the technology we introduce into it, isn't apolitical or free of normative stakes and real, harmful implications for people. Treating where you've worked and what technology you've stewarded into being as an ethically neutral fact isn't neutral at all. What concerns me is that there's an increasing firewall against calling out things that ACTUALLLY harm people — while an objection gets reframed as a personal attack on someone willingly able to propagate problematic things. But this seems to be where the corporate tech world is moving as it cozies up to the authoritarians.
