(May 2026)"

Since last summer, I am working on a yet another Wine prefix manager, called Wine Bar [1]. My main motivation was to have a user-friendly and opensource tool that can run (some) Windows apps on my Macbook Air M2 running Linux. Before you ask, it supports regular x86_64 Linux as well.
Besides, I wasn't entirely happy with the existing Wine launchers, namely Lutris / Heroic / Bottles (none of which support Linux on Apple hardware, although I was able to run an old version of Heroic under muvm).
I wanted more control. For instance, sometimes I need to install a Windows component using winetricks before an installer for some Windows app would agree to run. I also wanted even more user-friendliness. I didn't want to manually specify the executable in the installation folder to run. I wanted the executable to automatically appear on a "Desktop" in the UI as a result of running the installer for a Windows app. All of that I've achieved.
Recently, I've put a very significant effort to make a Snap version of Wine Bar. An x86_64 Snap wouldn't be terribly difficult to make, but packaging an arm64 version as a Snap and making it work was really-really hard. That's because Linux on Apple hardware uses a non-4K hardware page size. So, running Windows apps in such an environment involves running a full-blown 4K-page Linux kernel inside a micro-VM. From within the VM, you register FEX-EMU as a binfmt-misc handler, and then finally you are able to run a Wine process or a wrapper around it (like Proton). Oh, in order for that to work, you also need to provide an x86_64 / x86 RootFS image for FEX-EMU. All those components need to be built as part of the Snap build process.
Long story short, I succeeded and the Snap version of Wine Bar is available from the Snap Store, yet I am still waiting [2] (for over 2 weeks without any reaction) for a couple of permissions to be granted to it. That's not a showstopper though, as the permissions may be granted manually by the user.
[1]: https://github.com/Tulon/WineBar
[2]: https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/autoconnect-requests-for-wineba...

I am a seasoned C++ developer with 23 years of experience in the industry. I have experience in Desktop, Embedded and Mobile development. I also did some back-end work and even some reverse engineering, though that was a while ago. I also have some ML experience (PyTorch) - also a while ago, but not that much. Most recently I've doing 3D graphics (simulation and later maps). My Linear Algebra is quite decent - I use it regularly.
My preferred next career move is independent contracting. 6-12 months contracts ideally.
My daily driver is a Macbook Air M2 running Linux - Fedora Asahi Remix to be precise. One thing I missed when using it is the ability to occasionally run Windows software using Wine. Apparently, you can run Steam on it and apparently Steam allows installing and running arbitrary Windows software, but when I tried it, I couldn't create an account and in general, I'd rather not use Stream. I succeeded running and older version of Heroic Games Launcher [1] under muvm (a virtual machine that runs a 4K page kernel on a 16K one). That wasn't terribly easy though and I wanted a better experience. My other problem with Heroic and with other launchers focused on games is the lack of flexibility - they either work for a particular piece of software or they don't, and you can't do anything about it. For instance, an installer may require a certain package to be installed using Winetricks [2], before it runs. Heroic doesn't give you a chance to run anything before the installer runs. Long story short, I decided to build my own Wine prefix manager that would be flexible, not focused exclusively on games and would run on Asahi Linux. Also, I decided to write it in a new language for me (Dart / Flutter) and learn that language as a byproduct. Five months later, it's finally ready and I'd like to get feedback on it. BTW, it also supports regular x86_64 Linux distros, though it doesn't receive as much testing on them.
[1]: https://heroicgameslauncher.com/

Unfortunately, c-ares is not problem-free on all platforms.
On iOS, its use triggers a local network access popup (it tries to reach your DNS server, which is often on your LAN). If a user denies acess, your app will simply not work.
On Android, it's not compatible with some VPN apps. Those apps are to blame, but your users are going to blame you not them.
So, at my previous company we ended up building libcurl with a threaded DNS resolver on both iOS and Android.
