I remember when I decided I wanted to create a TUI for ROS2, I went through tens of libraries trying to figure out which would be best suited for what I wanted. I remember stumbling upon Nick's book "Hacking the planet with Notcurses". I Loved his attitude and passion, and felt it was fitting for what I was working on.
I was always impressed by how clean and consistent Notcurses was, I never found myself wanting for functionality or power. It was always performant and stayed out of my way when I was doing the un-orthodox. I consider it a shining example of the kind of culture that got me into this sort of thing. I look forward to working with it again when I find the excuse!

Not in the same decade, but I attribute a non-zero part of my robotics obsession to a friend's cybot (http://lpilsley.co.uk/cybot/). I remember being amazed at it following a line, and always wanted the magazines. Tragically, it was long discontinued by the time I discovered it.
Every now and then I think about trying to get my hands on a collection and following along. I'd love to find out if there is anything in there that I haven't yet learned, despite working with robots professionally...

THIS is the kind of thing I was expecting when I clicked on the parent link, ASCII art, instead of computer converted images. While there is nothing wrong with rasterising an image to ASCII, there is something I really love about the hand drawn stuff. Especially the early ones where the 'canvas' size was so limited, it forced such creativity.

Not so sure it's all doom and gloom for "old internet". I still find plenty of spaces that feel like they're created purely for the love it it, there is just many orders of magnitude more crap you need to sift through. The people writing about interesting things compete with people who write as a form of personal branding, and these people aggressively measure engagement (You know the type).
I remember reading one of these blogs, and saw something like "You have an obligation to advertise your content to potential users", the very idea of which is genuinely insane. Imagine trying to run a banner ad linking to your blog. But, those are the people who will play the SEO game, and they're the people you'll find in the first 2 pages of search.
