It kinda makes me want to mess around with special fonts on my blog, but designing a simple way to change fonts and font options on a per-post basis sounds difficult.

I didn't know about branch prediction or pipelined CPUs back when I was profiling the code I wrote - honestly it probably would have helped.

RethinkDNS has the potential to solve all my problems since it can do per-app proxies, however I've found that it doesn't work well with Proton (or possibly Wireguard as a whole) with frequent proxy disconnects, making it a very painful experience. Which is a shame because in some cases I value DNS filtering more than VPN.

It's not fun to lose GPS, but, a trained pilot ought to have been able to handle this situation fine. All instruments can fail, but weather notwithstanding, no instruments are required to land a plane back down on a runway (implied in my statement is that, if you lose all your instruments, you should still try to land rather than continue your flight).

At the end of the day, if you aren't proficient in VFR, then your IFR proficiency doesn't mean much. Hopefully this pushes the relevant flight schools to do more training, because this crash appears highly avoidable - and while the pilots take some amount of blame since they are behind the controls, there are also people who failed them by not giving them sufficient training.

I'm also completely unbothered by the precedent of drip feeding product ads to someone's LLM chat history, and having that influence future conversations, because if you're going to outsource your buying decisions to an LLM, frankly I don't really care if you buy stupid products at that point - you brought that on yourself.

Tangentially related, does anyone know any FOSS (local preferred, but self hosted if required for performance) assistant apps? After switching to GrapheneOS I do miss Bixby (say what you want about it, but creating reminders/alarms by merely holding down a button and using natural speech was quite handy).

Licenses like the CC suite, and the GNU GPL or MIT software licenses, cannot be revoked after the fact, nor changed. The licensor can choose to stop publishing a work under, for example, CC, but all those who still have a CC licensed copy of the work may continue to use it according to that license. And in fact, I believe they can even continue distributing it themselves, making a license change mostly useless (unless the work is updated I guess).

Hopefully we can use this same logic to reform (destroy) section 1201 of the DMCA.

LLMs are trained on code that's already copyrighted, so their output may already be someone's copyright. Non-trivial LLM generated code is unethical to use since you're very likely violating someone's license.

This is the only real balance between not violating copyright, and allowing LLM usage.

Shame that the kernel won't take this same approach, but at least I know GCC won't become full of illegally redistributed code...

when you license code under the GNU GPLv2 (as you are doing whenever you contribute to the kernel), you are making an overt intellectual property claim. Unless you include attribution back to another GNU GPLv2 (or compatible) source that you are copying from, you are asserting that all the code you've just contributed is work that you have a the full legal copy-right to distribute and (re-)license.

However, if non-trivial code contributions are made by LLMs, that cannot be ensured (even if the user intends for it to be the case), as LLMs will never be able to consistently and correctly attribute the source of their code (not to mention a lot of it was illegal to train on to begin with but that's besides the point).

An LLM could very easily reproduce code from a project which is incompatible with the GNU GPLv2, and not only will it be illegally integrated into the kernel source, but the contributor is actually falsely claiming it as their own original work.

I stated 'we' not 'I'. And I did not imply that we haven't been observing, I was stating historically that, with all we have observed about this duress pin case, we have yet to observe any of the listed things happening.

If one believes we have, in fact, observed any of the above things taking place - rather than complaining about an uninteresting or unproductive conversation - one should contribute evidence to the contrary, which would be productive by informing everyone here.
