Yes heroku did a great job, but what about the rest, they may just end up like Loopt, it was hyped and came down to alot of money raised and sold for nothing. And trust me YC isnt in this for the baby buyouts, its looking for that facebook.
Scribd is next, alot of hype and money, but just sucks.

The buyout prices you described are baby buys, those happen everyday, trust me investors arent thr those low ball buys. Yes people make money, but its not one for the history books, if success is maki million, then I guess thats your success.

Buddy, you just described all these companies that were aquired, many are hyped and dont last sometimes thats the only option or move forward. Loopt was aquired doesnt mean it was a success. Look at the details, if a company gets aquired for 20 mil, but needs to pay the vcs and staff and themselves alot of times its a loss, not in every case. But yc hasnt had any facebooks or googles, maybe later but I dont see it yet. And I never said they wouldnt have success, many will, but I dont care if they get people from each continent, they can still be the same style and type from what I see.

I have wondered about these companies and always thought they were hyped up, but at the end of the day...are they really that good? I don't think soooo :) YC companies seem cool at the start, but are they really doing anything, besides looking cool? It seems the same type of companies and same type of founders are in YC, not to say many won't continue to be successful, but if I was in the room at the YC office with everyone, the only thing in common would be technology, but it lacks diversity in many ways...many will argue that one and say they have people from all kinds of places, but really same old Ivy league, computer or engineering degrees, started or finished. Got jobs at big names etc etc etc. Boring!!! :) Thats why you see the same style of companies and no big winners cause its only selected by a few people, that probably look for the same traits of people. Is YC a bunch of Paul Grahams? lol

Do you go out and drink much? Seems nice but in the night life the last thing people are going to be doing is using an app to find out the cost of the drinks, then adding them in. Understand its hard enough to get a drink in crowded bars, it may help with costs, but that person may look like a cheapass with his little app. _Hey everyone my app says I didnt drink those beers and its off 50 cents, can I have the costs again to every drink i bought to I can add them into my app..... If I didnt buy a certain drink I just tell the waiter, I didnt drink that and they take it off.

This may not apply to PG or alot of others, but you would be surprised how much money people don't really have. I knew someone that I thought had cash. In reality he was broke and had all his money tied up in deals or stocks etc.
At the end of the day he lost it all and had no money. Even when you have a percent of something, doesn't mean you have money to spend, if the cash is not in your bank account you can't buy.

Design is more than a nice little picture, you can just have text on a page and you still design. Many people that don't know about design think its about images, it's usability, it's brand, it's feel, it's your damn company!! :)

Early stage things only go off of friends or people they know or met already. So forget about those services the founders already know what they want at that early stage. Maybe it would work for large established companies only.

You seem a bit like myself, a few years back. You are worried about "School Names" or how it looks to others.
Don't even worry about what school you attended, worry about the things you know. Did you learn anything?
Worry about what your skills are, good companies could careless if you went to no school and know the skills instead.
Worry about what projects you have done and what you learned from each one, even if the project was by yourself.
My point is people are so hung up on schools and degrees, they forget the skills and experience out-way any degree.
So worry about skills and experience even if its on your own experiments. The passed is the passed, hopefully you learned something at the school at the least.
You just don't learn in schools.

You make it sound so easy, I know it is not and I can do all that you have stated, but that will take sometime. Not saying its not all possible, but just not as easy as you stated and somethings you left out on doing it all correctly.

Yea I understand where your coming from with the Tagxedo (which is really cool, minus the copyright issues that could arise), but putting it on Zazzle would be debatable. Not my debate.
Regardless, if its not made for profit, after one sale its profit. I mean its really cool and I'm not one to care about all the legal crap, but someone does at times.
As far as your break even it doesn't matter if its not your brand your working on. I can spend months designing something a court wont care if its not mine in the first place.
I wouldn't really worry about it.
I really think its cool, but I was just stating some matters.

I think its a great design coming from a designer myself, but I'm no lawyer and I don't think you can be making money off someones logo or brand. I dont think you need to be a lawyer to know that either.
Plain and simple, would you want to create a startup and someone make tshirts and make money off your brand or logo?

The success of the startups speak for themselves. I am not sure whats the records are, but the article talks about Techstars being in a variety of cities and meeting alot of friends and having a huge Demo day.
In all honesty I feel like YC is just straight up and too the point. They don't need to work in an office, if you like a startup you'll go hangout together. They don't need to hype the Demo day, they just need the right few people in the room.
Techstars seems to have people from all over the place, which I prefer not to have. If I want to meet people I want to talk the the ones in the valley, because they understand.
I haven't been in either program, but follow both and YC just seems to wipe out the unnecessary old school corporate things. TechStars seems like you better be a social butterfly and talk with everyone even the ones that don't know anything about.
More mentors does not mean better. I would take 2 really good mentors over a 1000.
