They can legally do a lot more than that.
There is also a huge space between "obeying the laws and policies in the most conservative sense" (which is what you described) and being "illegal".
> do you apply this everywhere
In fact I do.
> should I let them because they can illegally shoot me
I'm not suggesting what you should do. That's up to you. I'm just saying the government can do a lot more than you think and get away with it, including "illegally" shooting you in circumstances. It's always a balance of risks. For me personally, If a normal cop ask to enter I'll refuse. But if it's ICE? That's suddenly a much harder choice.
Actually no I'll probably die either way. Who cares.

I don't get why in the comments this gets compared with regulations and security teams...
Say no to regulations and security --> Fine, forced correction, fewer customers, shutdown.
Say no to ethics --> money (at least for AI companies)
Why is this so hard to understand?

Well 99% of actual coding is just manual labor, nothing more. If that's not the case, either you are constantly at the cutting edge, which I cannot comment due to lack of experience, or your are constantly failing on the "engineering" part.

I mean it's a complex topic alright, but what you can learn with this is just a watered down pop-science level overview, which is not what I would call "learning".
A reasonable test is what I call the enhanced Feynman test: teach what you learnt to others, and be able to defend against reasonable questions.
A stretch goal I sometime use is to be able to read recent papers on the topic.
