I think we live in very different realities, 6k a year is nothing, its a weeks worth of pay for 1 SWE. A 6k a year savings opportunity is not on any funded startups radar.
And RDS is doing a lot more for you than what you can set up in an afternoon w.r.t observability and features that are just a click away. I actually implemented some of those features when I worked there :)

RDS gets you easy integration with the rest of the AWS services, which as a startup, you’re probably using quite a few of.
Also, if you are nickel and diming over expenses in the 50€ range, you’re probably at the wrong startup.

Great article.
> (For some reason, when I search the Internet for "streaming mapreduce," I don't get programs that do this real-time processing of lots of files as they get written. Instead, I seem to get batch-oriented mapreduce clones that happen to read from stdin, which is a stream.
I suppose this could be a good fit for Flink?

“The truth is most of what you see in food photographs is real. FTC laws state that whatever you’re selling with a photo must be real in the image. To use a familiar example, if you’re selling corn flakes the flakes must be real. But then it gets interesting. You can use white glue instead of milk in your bowl of flakes because you’re not selling the milk, only the corn flakes.”
