I, for one, am not trying to find scapegoats or go on a witchhunt.

But managers are paid a lot of money to take responsibility. Yes, that's an old school thought, responsibility. But that's one big reason they get a big, fat paycheck.

Sometimes simple answers are not only elegant, but capture the essence of a problem.

It's just that many (I guess that includes me? :D) assumed that they are better than the actually were.

And for each iteration there were scepticals...

If you're doing a simple CRUD app, sure.

If you're doing anything more involved they get the job done with dozens of shortcuts that bite you in the ass the moment you have on-call duty.

Way too much code and repetition and hacks.

Especially in GPU code, but also in other fields.

Everything business related runs over such a domain.

I had so much fun going there and going back on foot.

So much that when I was a teenager and my mother drove by my school one day and decided to pick me up, I was super unhappy, because I wanted to walk the 20 or so minutes with my friends to the bus.

When I had 9 hour school, I would need to wait 50 Minutes for a bus... or I walked the 5 kilometers home.

I always choose to walk, even when it rained, because I was faster and I loved it!

I am curious how it will be with my daughter, once she goes to school.

Because today this is totally frowned upon. But I will not play taxi for her all the time. Occasionally, sure. But CERTAINLY not every day.

I agree with the reality.

Oh, it also helps me to pay my bills, because someone has to untangle the mess.

And it helps my therapist, because he has to keep the madness that grows inside of me in check.

Jokes aside: I was taught OOP at university.

I was also taught functional programming, answer set programming and other forms such as logical programming.

Focus was definitely on OOP though.

I mainly see OOP as a way to (dis) organizer code and a way for hardware manufacturers to sell more hardware.

Like I agree with most everything he says and I like to optimise my own software, but for my day to day jobs and contracts it's simply not feasible.

That level of performance and rigor is not what is demanded nor paid or appreciated.

E.g. in Enterprise circles it's still OOP from top to bottom.

Mixed with a tad more functional style due to varying adoption of that paradigm in the languages used by enterprise.

But low level optimizations are not interesting to these customers at all, even though they could help them with some problems.

I am using it exclusively and since many decades.

I was specifically asking for desktop usage though, because that's what I am mostly working with.
