I've had this happen to me personally on vacation - we were locked out of our rental car, asked a person at the nearby place to call a locksmith to get me back in, and they didn't quote price over the phone. When they got there, they popped the lock and then wanted $200, cash only so you couldn't chargeback, which I learned after the fact is completely outrageous for that service. They had a lot of fake Google reviews that were glowing, overshadowed by the real ones calling out the scam.

I've heard worse happening in other cases where they drill locks and then quote much higher than $200 after they do it, it's sadly common.

The DOE does a lot of "energy consuming" or less than environmentally friendly work, to include, historically, nuclear tests, and also has had ownership of some of the largest TOP500 supercomputers over the years.

Large compute projects such as an open language model aren't too far from their usual. You could easily argue the race to AGI is the closest thing to a modern Manhattan Project we've had in some time.

Whether that's a good allocation of resources is debatable, but from a national strategic perspective this makes sense, since private industry has pulled out of government contracts before in the LLM space (see Anthropic), this is just hedging their bets.

The video recording/cameras I don't necessarily care about nor frankly want, what I want is a nice set of glasses with a HUD untethered from a bulky puck or battery pack. That's a device I've wanted to hack on for a long time - Google Glass was actually something I was interested in sans camera, I think there's still great potential for HUD style devices without the privacy implications of world facing cameras.

Was hoping that Google would be able to get the technology there this year for consumers, especially since Meta announced and demoed similar. Seems like Meta is going to be the only game in town for this for the foreseeable future, but I don't trust Meta in the slightest with a device like this from a privacy standpoint nor a platform openness standpoint.

Ugh. Was really hoping that they were going to actually announce a release date for the display glasses this year at I/O, but it seems that they still don't have the tech ready for this. Audio only this year is a massive disappointment.

Very cool! I did a similar project with an accompanying app that connected to one of these inexpensive printers over Bluetooth in order to play a Discord, Lord of Disharmony commander deck in person.

The portability of the whole setup makes it easy to bring to an LGS, it's always a treat to see people's reactions when I pull out the printer and they see how the deck works!

Would love to experiment with this for work, but the following clause in the license (notably absent in the Llama 2 license) would make this really hard:

If you distribute or make available the Llama Materials (or any derivative works thereof), or a product or service that uses any of them, including another AI model, you shall (A) provide a copy of this Agreement with any such Llama Materials; and (B) prominently display “Built with Meta Llama 3” on a related website, user interface, blogpost, about page, or product documentation. If you use the Llama Materials to create, train, fine tune, or otherwise improve an AI model, which is distributed or made available, you shall also include “Llama 3” at the beginning of any such AI model name.

Really impressive HumanEval results for the 8B model though, would love to plug this into Continue for tab completion since the current benchmark numbers for Llama 3 8B blow every other 8B model out of the water
