MiLaboratories | Senior Software Engineer (Biologic Discovery) | Bilbao, Spain | ONSITE | VISA | RELOCATION
MiXCR is the standard for immune analysis, cited in thousands of papers. Platforma is the OS on top — bioinformatics as self-serve, interoperable "blocks" for biologic discovery.
5 of the top 10 pharma (Moderna, Pfizer, others) run discovery with Platforma today. Goal: 10 of 10 by year-end. Hiring 4–5 engineers in 90 days. Our tools are in the methods of approved cancer immunotherapies and COVID vaccines reaching millions. The next paper citing us could be the next drug.
We merged frontend, bioinformatics, and data into one team. AI killed the silo wall. Bioinformaticians who leaned into engineering and engineers who leaned into biology now ship at multiples.
WHAT YOU'D BUILD
- Discovery pipelines: raw sequences → pre-IND leads. Antibodies, biomarkers, workflows real scientists use.
- The SDK for comp scientists: TypeScript, Tengo (a Lua-like workflow DSL — yes, you'll learn it), Rust.
- The data layer: thousands of formats reduced to one. PFrames, Parquet, DataFusion, lazy columnar everything.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Strong TS in 100k-line monorepos (pnpm, Turbo). Polars > pandas. Node ≥22.
- Bioinformatics exposure or appetite to learn it month one. We can teach VDJ recombination; not curiosity.
- Tolerance for sparse docs and niche DSLs. "Fix the SDK, don't work around it."
OFFER
- €90–120k base, real ESOP, ARR-tied bonus — when we grow, you grow, in cash, this year.
- Bizkaia Special Impatriate Regime: ~15–20% effective tax. Beats London / Berlin / Amsterdam net.
- Visa, relocation, soft-landing. No HR, no take-homes. Direct line to engineering.
- Bilbao: ocean, mountains, Michelin, low cost of living, highest quality of life. Onsite — context-sharing needs same room.
Email: stanp@milaboratories.com (CEO). Subject "HN", include GitHub. I reply personally. Tell me about a scientific CLI you wrapped, a plugin SDK you built, or a Polars query that survived 50M rows.

MiLaboratories | Bilbao, Spain | ONSITE | RELOCATION SUPPORT | https://platforma.bio
We are MiLaboratories, the team behind Platforma.bio & MiXCR. We are building the "OS for Biology"—the foundational infrastructure where all biological data is transformed into life-saving breakthroughs. We work fully on-site in Bilbao because the complexity of our problems (high-performance computing + deep biological nuances) requires high-bandwidth, in-person collaboration.
We dissolved traditional departmental silos. We are hiring hardcore builders, not analysts, for a critical core role:
*Senior TypeScript (SDK & Platform):* You will architect our frictionless, AI-native SDK to scale our ecosystem. This is not a CRUD web dashboard. You will build a heavy local desktop application that bridges directly with a high-performance Rust data layer. You must treat the browser engine as a runtime for heavy local apps. The standard is simple: if the SDK is too messy for us to build blocks at AI-speed, it is too messy for the world.
The Offer:
* Comp: Top-tier EU salaries (€90k - €120k EUR).
* Tax Advantage: Bizkaia has independent tax autonomy. You qualify for the "Special Impatriate Regime" (30% salary tax exemption + expense deductions - up to 50% in total).
* The Reality: Your effective tax rate drops to ~15-20%, yielding a significantly higher net income than London or Berlin.
* Stock: We grant ESOP and treat equity as a life-changing wealth vehicle, not a "nice to have."
* Relocation: Comprehensive "Soft Landing" package (Visa, temporary housing, school search).
* Location: Bilbao is a hidden gem—ocean, mountains, and high quality of life with a low cost of living.
Process: No HR screening. You will talk directly to the engineering team.
Email me (I am the CEO): stanp [at] milaboratories [dot] com. Please mention "HN" in the subject and include your GitHub.

MiLaboratories | Bilbao, Spain | ONSITE | VISA SPONSORSHIP | RELOCATION SUPPORT
We are MiLaboratories, the team behind Platforma.bio & MiXCR. We are building the "OS for Biology"—a platform that processes terabytes of genomic data to accelerate biological discovery and drug development.
We are a deep-tech research lab, not a typical SaaS. We work fully on-site in Bilbao because the complexity of our problems (high-performance computing + biological nuances) requires high-bandwidth, in-person collaboration.
We are hiring for three core roles:
1. Senior TypeScript Engineer (Desktop Platform / SDK): This is not a dashboard or a simple web GUI. You will build the architecture of our Desktop Platform—a high-performance local application that acts as the "OS" interface. You will deal with complex state management, massive data throughput, and bridge directly with our high-performance Rust data layer. We need someone who treats the browser engine as a runtime for heavy applications, not just for websites.
2. Senior Go Engineer: You will build distributed systems for high-load genomic data processing. This is not CRUD. We need someone who understands memory management, concurrency, and algorithmic efficiency at scale.
3. Bioinformatics Developer (Antibody Discovery): You will work on the scientific core, developing production blocks for NGS data analysis and antibody structure prediction. You should be fluent in both code and biology (Builder profile, not just analyst).
The Offer:
Comp: Top-tier EU salaries (~€90k - €120k).
Tax Advantage: Bizkaia has independent tax autonomy.
Technically, no—and that’s actually a huge plus.
The 'Beckham Law' (24% flat rate) applies to the rest of Spain. Bizkaia has fiscal autonomy and a different system to attract talent: you get a 30% exemption on gross income plus you can deduct specific expenses (like your apartment rent, school fees, etc.) from the taxable base.
The total tax exemption can reach up to 50% of your gross income.
This stacking effect (exemption + expense deductions) is why the effective rate here often drops well below the national 24%. For example, on a €100k salary, your effective tax rate typically lands between 15-20% (depending on your rent and family status).

Thanks! It’s a common surprise. The Basque Country (Bizkaia) has fiscal autonomy, so the rules here are pretty different from Madrid or Barcelona. It allows us to flip the 'high tax' narrative and offer a massive net upside for expats.
