The internet was/is inter-machine communication for the military (and/or business), then a way to beat our ignorance, then a user-generated content machine. It was most certainly not invented by someone who thought reality is too boring.

I find this wider reactionary "touch grass" movement boring and interesting simultaneously. It is boring, because nobody interested in internet-as-community health asked for many of the abuses that have happened to it and obviously you'd want to flee those. It is interesting because... I never would have expected that 20 years ago.

When everyone suddenly started calling themselves engineers instead of programmers I cringed (yes, that's a lot of cringe over the past decade+), precisely because no formal guarantees were ever given (and still largely aren't).

It's like eyeballing the dimensions of a building and saying it should hold. That said, I see the discipline excused. The stakes weren't that high and it was all very new... And e.g. mechanical engineering went through this as well, except a lot of people actually died.

Time to shine, theoretical CS, time to shine.

I don't interpret it to that extreme. I think it's more about shutting out noise and acting along a thread that keeps you pleased without interference from e.g. brainrot media or an over-demanding job.

Arguably a reason most everyone found the early internet/web so awesome: it wasn't as commoditized into feeds and platforms. You were an adventurer on an undiscovered planet, a secret life beside the boring real one and just did your thing. It's how most of us ended up here, anyhow.

In Germany there is a "Vorabpauschale" where you pay a certain part of the capital gains tax on ETFs, certain funds even with unrealised gains. These are later accounted for when you sell. Though AFAIK if you sell at a loss you can't get the Vorabpauschale back directly, but it would increase the losses you can potentially apply against other gains. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorabpauschale
