Does anyone else suspect that these companies are doing this for the bad PR, yes they destroy a few books. But then they can point to it to silence the copyright lawsuits, meanwhile they actually are ripping copies of Anna's Archive etc...

This. I bribed my way out of many traffic tickets in Southeast Asia by suggesting that because I’m so busy, I’ll pay the cop directly and then he can pay the ticket on my behalf. Worked every time except once, where the guy was a real stickler

As a religious person, I find it fascinating how my concept of God could fit into simulation theory. Miracles, prayer, afterlife, healing - all these Christian concepts can be explained very easily if we imagine a futuristic neckbeard sitting in front of his gaming rig playing our world like a giant game of the sims.

Having worked in customer service before, the only time customers tried to reason with me was when they were wrong. For at least a large portion of customer service calls, the ability to reason is a negative. Customer calls to say the product is faulty, and with a simple question they admit they didn’t connect the ground wire. They then try to reason with me that they deserve a warranty replacement because their mum just got cancer - fuck reason on cs calls. (Reason might still have a place on complex situations [which yours never is], customer retainment, sales etc)

Even as the top tier tech support for a complex product, 99% of my calls could have been dealt with well by chat gpt in its current form. And my customers would have a more concise outcome, without the variability of my mood, hold times, judgement of their tone etc to effect my advice.

I can’t wait for more ai cs so I can stop talking to a fuckwhit, and talk to an ai that’s almost certainly far more equipped to handle my query.

I have a lathe and a mill at home. Quit my job in the city 1.5 hours away during covid and now run a business from home / get to be a parent. It’s the best. I gave up $190k salary to barely make my mortgage, best decision I ever made!

I consider myself to be pretty switched on when it comes to privacy, although I’ve began caring less and less as my attention is spent on other things… Maybe I slipped to far, because last night I was browsing a website looking for a Human Machine Interface from 4d systems (a relatively niche product) Today, it’s the first ad that appears on Instagram. Any idea how it got there?

1. Searched for it via DuckDuckGo, in safari on OS X. (Signed into Instagram on that browser, and fake Facebook account which shares no info with said Instagram. Fake facebook account signed in on same iPhone as Instagram. 2. Instagram and fake Facebook settings have fully disabled all tracking and ad personalisation settings that are possible. 3. I actively engage ads I don’t care about, and often receive ads for COMPLETELY irrelevant things, I find this fun.

How did within a matter of hours this HMI end up on my Insta feed, I’m sure I’m missing something obvious… surely not cookies…

Someone shared, or bled data. 4d systems webpage? Likely - but they don’t know anything about me… AdGuard and safari - couldn’t be a cookie? duckduckgo? Doubt it Safari? I thought safari blocked cross site tracking?

I just got a phone call yesterday from Autodesk, saying they’ve seen me active using the new Generative Design function, and asked how I’m finding it / what I’m doing with it to make money. Great feedback for them, and I felt chuffed to get a phone call, and am happier with my software than I was before - win win!

This article is hyperbolic and angsty. 90% of users in Australia don’t have a need for a dongle, and for those that do, there is a dongle. My iMac at work has a dongle to attach a second monitor via hdmi. My iMac at home does not, I would buy a dongle if needed. My AirPod pros are the best headphones I’ve ever had, would never go back to wired headphones, but if you’re an audiophile - there is a dongle for you. If you use flash drive still, there’s a dongle, or a USB C flash drive. If you need 400 USB ports, there’s a dongle.

This doesn’t limit anyone, it’s just turning the devices into more slim lined machines with better IP ratings. 90% of people (made up statistic) are happy with this system, I’m sick of hearing these old codgers dream of the glory days when their thinkpad had 40 ports... buy a thinkpad then ya dangus, why would you buy a Tesla if I want to go rock crawling off road?

Question: Any tips for using iCloud on work Mac?

Part of the appeal of the Mac ecosystem as most of us are aware, is the interconnectivity of all services and devices. However, I've began to get self conscious about leaving my iCloud logged into my work Mac, with all my personal emails, photos, keychain and text messages synced.

How are others handling this? Not using personal services on a work computer? Is anyone logging these services out at the end of each day? I'm afraid in the UK my employer would have the right to all of my data if I left it logged in, or if they demanded the password.

Ask HN: I want to unify my computing to a VM

I have a work PC, a personal MacBook Pro, and a desktop that runs my media server.

I’m tired of transferring files back and forth, and want to unify these machines. Beyond having my MacBook Pro permanently sitting there with VNC running so I can access it, I want to move entirely to a VM that I can access from my barebones MacBook Pro, my media PC or my work PC. Or my phone. I know AWS and a million other companies offer VPS, and maybe I’m over complicating it - but I desperately want a single system that I can bring up from any terminal I happen to be using at the time. I’d be happy to bring it with me on a USB disk, and launch it with portable VMware in a pinch, but would much rather have it be cloud based, and running OSX.

Does anyone have any insight or ideas for how to move away from having multiple computers without replacing my work machine?
