Maybe what they hoped is what actually happens. The SEC gives wealthy people and companies a slap on the wrist typically. A fine that means nothing. Government agencies like the IRC or SEC mostly go after smaller players who are mostly less malicious but don’t have the connections or wealth to fight off the bureaucracy. But in FTX’s case they got in trouble before they reached that level of power.

How did they have such a large stake? Is this some sort of social club between the Amodei’s and SBF because they share the same ideology (effective altruism)? Did Anthropic get partially funded by stolen money as a result? If so, that’s just gross and puts me off Anthropic.

It’s longer than these 24 hours. Just 48 hours ago Dario Amodei wrote a long essay that argued for export controls on other parts of the AI supply chain. Anthropic has marketed Mythos as being too dangerous for months. Dario also has been fear mongering for years, like when he claimed GPT 2 was too dangerous.
With all of this, if there’s even a hint of a jailbreak, why would a) Anthropic not fix the issue, and b) why would they be surprised at an export ban?
The doomerism and safety theater and bid for regulatory capture has ironically hurt Anthropic itself. This company needs a new set of grown ups running it.

Why not just redistribute directly? If the concern is that some existing residents will no longer be able to afford things, give long time residents a subsidy voucher.

Yea isn’t that basically all “normal” work? You do tasks and have little ownership or fun.
It’s also obviously not “literally” the gulag. Do these children know what a gulag is and what happens there? It’s quite offensive to equate their luxurious spoiled lives with people getting tortured and murdered over politics.

Anthropic themselves have played up the dangers of Mythos, limited its release, etc. So if it can be jail broken then it specifically deserves controls, per Dario’s own manifestos. David Sacks - the “AI Czar” - also said the government asked Anthropic to patch the issue but they refused, which is bizarre. And that led to the export ban.

Doesn’t it still mean they have made better investment choices than the other big tech companies? I guess I don’t see why they missed a boat here. Also the models may be as much a commodity as compute.

Did they miss it or are they careful to over invest, especially too early? Maybe their early bets in Anthropic were sized correctly since they’re making more money than all the other big tech investors in frontier labs.

I don’t think we will know. On the one hand, labs hold back until they have something competitive enough to release. So if Fable isn’t around, it removes that pressure. On the other hand, the Chinese labs have been moving fast anyways and are obviously behind, so it’s not any more of a problem to release a model that isn’t the very best.

The real “how” is that our laws are not good enough to prevent the kind of corruption practiced by Trump and Musk. And agencies like the SEC are wasting time on useless side quests instead of going after the most obvious examples of fraud - like an administration that makes outrageous announcements all the time, that their friends and family can trade on. And they’re not going to go after Musk and everyone who is part of that IPO either.

I think the problem is the market is often irrational and subject to groupthink. It’s not irrational to take a bet that the value somehow sticks around, especially with all the games being played to prop up this overvalued stock.

It certainly falls under 1st amendment protection since LLMs are about accessing speech. But that hasn’t stopped Dario from trying hard to push for regulations and bans that limit our civil rights. He and Sam Altman want regulatory capture at the expense of our right to free speech.

Yep and they also want to only exempt models below some level of compute or capability from this process. In other words, if an open model ends up being competitive, they’ll use regulations to ban it.
