I love the concept, but doesn't this just open the same door to bots? Especially if they think they are getting fast tracked. Search LinkedIn for these links -> autofill them.
I do really love your website (at least on mobile): your /r link is the perfect elevator pitch. Your main home page is well designed and provides a lot of details without being overwhelming.

I had a thought today: I can just send anything to an FTP client. It just assumes that the FTP server will tell it what files are on the server and handle the exchange of data. What if I just lie to it?
I was going to make a blog that could only be read by FTP, my other thought was a sort of "gate" system that would turn on a website but to access the website first you had to submit a file (maybe signed GPG message) to the FTP server and on a connection it would fire up port 80 or allow your IP address on port 80.
However, I've been playing with Masscan and wanting to learn more about that side of the Internet so the tool I built is Lovegood FTP - "Maybe a honeypot?". You could use it to log ip addresses that try to access your FTP. I love the idea of using it to prank your friends. Set it to display a bunch of pirated movies and then have a message for them.
Anyway, if you would like to see for yourself what it does you can connect to FTP at lovecraft-ftp.travis.plus on port 21 with any username/password.
:) If you think this is funny / good / stupid I would love a star. I'm job hunting and apparently they can help and I'll take all the help I can get.

Except that's not the point at all. The US just proved to the world that it doesn't care about competition and it's citizens (in some number) have rejected the concept of "National Security" by switching to a more explicitly Chinese company.
That's a blow to hegemony that will have lasting consequences.

Economics, prestige, etc. It’s worth a lot to China to be competing with the US in social media / Internet stuff. China (and Russia) have been pushing a narrative that the US operates on two sets of rules for them vs everyone else.
The US is happy to invade countries and turns a blind eye to Israeli aggression but Russia or China want to do it and they are met with sanctions etc. The last bastion of American exceptionalism was how it’s a free market and values free speech and free competition.
There was a national security threat but the US walked right into it: China is making a move for the top spot as global hegemon. It’s recruiting other countries to say don’t work with the US, work with us instead. The US flinched. Ralph blew the conch and all the kids just installed RedNote .

My first real "business" was running one of the largest ebook piracy sites in the world. One thing that pops up when talking to people who upload is they are far more hesitant to share books they have bought when they are worried that they will have hidden watermarks on them.
I also hate DRM. It’s a pain for legitimate users and trivial for someone like me to remove. So I've built Ebook Defender (name a work in progress) a tool to invisibly watermark ebooks without DRM. The watermarks are unnoticeable to readers and don’t affect formatting.
This is a working demo. You can upload an EPUB, add a watermark, and verify it. The full version supports more formats and can scan sites for watermarked copies (this largely uses existing technology, it will follow Usenet, Torrents, and also automatically track sites like mobilism etc).
The reason this isn't a fully featured SaaS or something is honestly, I don't know where to go from here. My background isn't in this space, my contacts within this space don't exactly return my emails, and I don't know what to do with it. Please feel free to break it!
I would love your feedback on any part of this whole thing.
Thanks!
Oh: If you want an epub to test with Gutenburg.org has a lot here's one https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1661.epub.noimages

I currently live in Vietnam so this is big news here, I think what makes it tougher is that she is so unlikable. She's almost certainly guilty of exactly what she was accused of and despite what she says now when she's facing the death penalty, I think her biggest regret about it is getting caught.
THAT SAID, no person deserves the death penalty and certainly not for stealing money. I also think that she's clearly a talented business woman and she could use those skills she learned embezzling to help the government crack down on corruption. Maybe there's a reason why that's not an option...
I hope she can raise the money to prevent the death penalty because Vietnam didn't deserve to have it's money stolen and she doesn't deserve to die. But if she does I don't think you're going to find many wet eyes here.

I've been working for myself for over a decade doing random projects for clients while also doing my own thing. My resume looks awful and the job market is trash. If be willing to take a job as a jr developer and work my way up (or a sys admin).
I used to run one of the world's largest ebook piracy websites but want to put that life behind me. Recently work came across my desk to create tens of thousands of accounts on a well respected website so they could more easily scrape it.
I just want a traditional job, but I also want to support my family and $4000 for a months work

I think part of the problem is if they provide a game, even for free, then they are responsible for the security of that game. Even if not legally, they don't want an article saying "unreal hacked by Ransomware people infecting anyone who joined a public server, people could download the game on the Epic store for free"
At least if a third party provides it then it's not really an official copy of the game.

I would have it set so you can either blacklist or whitelist wifi connections. EG if I'm at home, I might want to make it enable but otherwise let me use my phone. Or maybe have work WiFi blacklisted so it happens everywhere except when I'm at work.

I was building a program that needed to allow a user to set a hotkey but the program lives in the taskbar so there's no UI. I decided what I would do is enable the caplock key when they click "Set Hotkey" and then they can disable the caplock key (or set it to its initial state, rather) to indicate they have finished.
That project is still going but I got sidetracked by the idea that I could just build a program to randomly enable the caplock key every once in a while.
This isn't a program designed to calculate child malnutrition or do anything to stop genocide etc but I was able to do it in a few hours and learn some new tricks.
I hope this isn't too stupid for HN.

You know what I really want to see? A new version of backpages but with peer review arms other safety tools for sex workers.
Like Upwork where the client rates and reviews the SW but the SW rates and reviews the client. New accounts on either side are treated more skeptically but also the power users are also more easily identified.
When backpages was shut down I spent a few days playing around with it but ultimately between the legal risk (which I'm fine with, generally), the social risk of being the guy who runs a SW website (even though I've never hired a SW before, myself), and the internal debate I had about trafficking (I was pretty convinced my system would protect girls from trafficking but I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I did actually enable someone to be trafficked.
I think you have a valuable website and I don't think enough people are willing to openly operate in this area.

I haven't wanted to wade into this because I want people to use and experience the site in the way they want but also I am kinda interested in the discussion about what kind of "rules" should exist.
Honestly, I appreciate @Cabinguy for taking the initative to show people how it works and if the price of admission is some links to his stuff all the better. Furthermore, this is exactly what it is for. I guess in some ways it IS spammy but that's sort of the point is the market your own links. Generally this url then gets put in your instagram / tiktok / whatever bio that only allows one link.
I like that @WizzWizz4 (the greatest of the WizzWizzes in my opinion) was defending the "sanctity" of my site but also probably more importantly to them this site. However, I just don't think it is needed here. As the website was used as exactly it was intended.
:) Maybe no one was wrong.
