I recently built a GitHub Markeplace [0] app Pull Reminders [1] and have been really impressed by GitHub's ecosystem strategy. They seem to taking lessons from Slack's success and doubling down on supporting integrators who provide valuable apps and features built on top of GitHub (ie. TravisCI, ZenHub). I hope this direction continues under new ownership.
GitLab on the other hand is focused on solving every facet of the development lifecycle within their core product. From their blog post about GitHub's acquisition:
> ... instead of integrating multiple tools together, we believe a single application, built from the ground up to support the entire DevOps lifecycle is a better experience leading to a faster cycle time.
It will be interesting to see how the different strategies play out.
[0] https://github.com/marketplace

Thanks Mike. I'm sorry I wasn't more specific. The feedback you've provided is actually very useful since we redesigned the page just last week with the things you mentioned in mind.
Overall, we're working on properly communicating to our particular audience/demographic... old school guys. We don't want to make our product look cheap but we also don't want it to look too expensive.

David, that's a great question.
We actually started out by displaying user flows as flow charts... we quickly realized that flow charts are an inefficient way to display a comprehensive batch of sequential user actions and application flows. It IS easier to type outlines in a text editor than mess around with flow charts.
We transferred that realization to this web app.
Our user actions are linked to application screens, which gives you a good overview of how your user interacts with your application.

I'm a self-employed contractor and want to incorporate with a partner to form an LLC.
Our company will have a consulting/contracting arm and incubate + launch new products (websites/apps).
While the looseness of LLC operating agreements would allow everything to be bundled into one LLC (and profit share + ownership of individual products/projects be defined in the operating agreement via "special allocations"), I think it would be easier to break up certain operations/products/initiatives into separate LLCs.
Series LLC's seem perfect for what we are trying to do, but I'm unsure about what the advantages/disadvantages are of a Series LLC vs opening multiple individual LLCs.
Fees? Taxes? Ease of opening new LLC's? How does ownership of the parent LLC affect management/ownership of the child LLC's?
If anyone can refer/recommend a good lawyer/consultant, I'd love to speak to an expert.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Series_LLC
http://www.limitedliabilitycompanycenter.com/series_llc.html
http://www.mayer-riser.com/Articles/business/seriesllc.htm

Interesting :) Offering a money back guarantee regardless of whether or not the customer is charged initially seems smart.

I am working on a software-as-a-service product and am trying to decide on how best to implement sign up. My product offers 4 paid plans; there is no free plan.
For those of you who don't know, Braintree's (payment gateway) sponsoring bank no longer allows new companies to offer a traditional "30-day free trial", take credit card information during sign up, and then charge customers at the end of the free trial (like 37signals).
So, I am trying to decide between the following two options:
1) No credit card required at sign up. 14 day free trial on all new accounts. At the end of the 14 day trial, if the customer has not "activated" their account (that is, provided credit card information and been charged), the account is locked/closed until they.
What I like about this method is that it should convert the most users who land on the site to sign up to use the application. My concern is that the additional step (having to provide credit card info after sign up) could lead to fewer paid users... Keep in mind, though, that I am not offering a free plan, only a free trial period.
2) 30-day money back guarantee. Credit card is required at sign up and the customer is charged immediately. But, for 30-days, the user can cancel the account and receive a full refund.
I like this method because it means 100% users are paying customers and actually get billed. My concern is that a "30-day money back guarantee" + credit card required at sign up + immediate charge will lead to a much lower sign up conversion rate on the website, ultimately leading to less customers then method #1.
- Abi

I came up with the idea for Yar Matey last fall when applying for housing at UIUC. Many incoming Freshmen peruse Facebook groups looking for roommates in order to avoid being randomly assigned one by the university. I found paging through Facebook discussion boards to be horribly inefficient and envisioned an app that combined Facebook’s omnipresence with focused functionality to aid in searching for roommates.
Yar Matey is a pirate-themed site where college students can find potential roommates. Built with Facebook Connect, the user experience is modeled around how students typically look for roommates on Facebook — select your school, fill out an easy survey, then look for roommates.
I built the site in about a week.
