Another article where discussion is engineered. If the article is in any way provoking you to question it in any way and to go down those rabbit holes with preconceived talking points, it’s by design. It’s getting tiresome reading articles where comment sections write themselves.
Avoid.

I’ve commented on this topic recently, and go figure Haidt is brought up: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44402475
I’m of the opinion there’s very little (not nothing) wrong with social media, and a whole lot wrong with people. Kids are just seeing how fucked up humans are earlier than we did and they realize early on they’re trapped in this shitbox with us.
But yes, let’s blame class warfare and rampant corruption on social media. That’ll fix it, lads.
(Side note: fuck cal newport)

Empty comment from me but thank you for being more nuanced than most about what constitutes an addiction. It’s tiring to listen to the HN wringing in some performance of outrage of who can be the most offended yet least affected by the article.
(The moderator(s) are praised endlessly but have done a terrible job of steering the community. They’ve merely shut out voices that were the loudest and most disagreeable, a phyrric victory at best)

As expected a lot of the comments here are anecdotes. I’m assuming there exists a class of highly technical articles that get posted regularly that incite ancillary discussion, but no real contribution involving the article.
For me, I don’t like that this is about a mathematical model. I don’t want a mathematical model. I like the theory, and I think it’s interesting. I don’t need further digressions into a model. I want to see the real thing. Prove it, replicate it, codify it.

That has been the case for a very, very long time. Classical music is basically one big orgy of wealthy people. Musicians born into families of musicians that were well off. Same goes for other artistic pursuits such as painters etc.
I found very little actual insight in this article. I think musicians have been struggling for decades and the parents have known for at least as long to tell their kids to get a degree regardless of their talents. Schools like Berklee are… questionable at best. Lots off nepo babies just taking a few years to fuck about, basically.

Maybe I missed it but which FPGA did they use for this? I’m interested in learning FPGAs but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of freewheel documentation or software out there, it’s mostly vendor locked. I’m spoiled by the availability of STM32, AT, TI, etc MCUs and how easy it is to kludge things together.

I’d like to see a proper study on this that can be replicated before I jump on this train. And I’m a supporter of Jonathan “the kids are not alright” Haidt but let’s not kid ourselves his work is questionable throughout.
It’s easy to dogpile. I’d like to see more proof, that’s all. “It’s obvious” doesn’t cut it for me. For one, we have major societal problems that are being exposed through these platforms, and the mere knowledge of the problem has a negative impact on the individual. Do we shut the platform down because it’s showing us things we don’t want to see, or do we fix the societal problem? And many others.
