For a lot of items I’ve looked into, Newegg and Microcenter had comparable prices. Several small items were cheaper at microcenter, presumably because Newegg marked up the prices for low cost items to cover the free shipping.

Don’t forget about power. If you’re trying to build a low power NAS, those hdds idle around 5w each, while the ssd is closer to 5mw. Once you’ve got a few disks, the HDDs can account for half the power or more. The cost penalty for 2TB or 4TB ssds is still big, but not as bad as at the 8TB level.

Yep. I think you may be right, it’s EOL and probably doesn’t have any more updates available. I have a VM for when I need old Java, but I was going to need an older VM to run Flash, and that just wasn’t how I wanted to spend my time. :D

Even worse was one of mine last year that needed Flash. Apparently we neglected to update it. I can handle ancient Java, but trying to get Flash setup was going to be futile, so I just went to the data center.

I was not a reader as a kid. I just didn’t ever read books. But around age 13, I had to read a book for school. I picked up Eon at the library, and I read it, and actually wanted to read the whole thing.
After that I got my hands on every book he had written. Moving Mars is possibly the only book I ever read twice.
Later in life reading sci-fi is no longer an interest of mine, however his books were transformative for me.

Just the people that need to, usually the security or operations team that handles creating or deleting accounts, or setting up billing stuff, or creating the initial roles or users that will be needed. All the other responses just say, “don’t use the root account”. That’s true, but there are some things that need the root account, and in a midsized company that shouldn’t be controlled by one person, but usually a small team. I don’t use the root account for anything outside of what it’s explicitly needed for, but I do need access to it for those times, and the rest of my team need that access too. And we have audit trails that let us know whenever someone uses the root account. Tada.

You can use the TOTP 6 digit code method, but instead of just scanning the QR code with your phone, you save the “serial” in your password manager and then all your employees can add that serial to the app on their device. Did that make sense? That’s what I do.

IIRC there was a brief period of time in the US where manufacturers could omit putting airbags in cars if they used an automatic seat belt instead. So a couple manufacturers did this to keep their costs down, but eventually airbags were required in all cars and the automatic seat belts went away.

This is kind of funny to me. I’m on an iPhone 8 from October 2017, so it’s just a hair shy of 5 years. I haven’t had a case or screen protector on it for at least the last 4 years. It still runs the latest iOS version. As someone who is concerned about waste, I just didn’t buy a new phone every 2 years, and it’s working out okay for me.
