Researchers are aware of it, but the press and the general public don't appear to be. Studies showing some association or another are regularly reported, and the public eats it up.

Something in the environment changed for sure. There are many theories. Some of them include the rise of ultra-palatable foods, the rise of plasticisers in the environment fucking with our hormones, the greater exposure to lithium, the rise of the "low fat" has in the 70s, and probably others.

We shouldn't assume that because we are a great ape that we eat the same as other great apes. Humans spent two million years away from the jungle evolving in the savanna, with very different food sources. Our guts changed quite a bit in that time, and our digestion doesn't work the same.

Can't read the article, but I hate the title framing. Like, what do you mean by woke? If I'm against misogyny, racism, homophobia, etc, is that woke? Or does it require something special I don't know about?

I know it wasn't originally so, but nowadays it seems to be just thrown around as a generic insult.

I don't believe they are talking about malthusianism. That's a straw man. The arguement is that the sheer number of people is causing damage to the natural environment, not that we can't grow enough food to feed people.

We are supposed to have new streamlined rules by November of this year per executive order 14300. I guess we'll see if that actually improves the process, or if nuclear is still unable to compete with wind and solar.

I've been buying local produce, when I can. I signed up for a CSA share in the spring and get an assortment of fresh veggies every week. The same place does have a local farm stand, so you don't have to sign up for the whole summer if you just want to buy some veggies.

There are a couple of "Saturday market" type things in my town, where people have booths selling produce also, but from what I can see there is no requirement that they grow their own produce, and I suspect they just buy from SYSCO or wherever. They always have things that aren't in season where I live.

Mine isn't that small, nearly half a million people in my metro area. They plan to close 8 of the 44 elementary schools. I do hear what others are experiencing in actual small towns though.

In my town they are talking about closing 8 primary schools next year because enrollment is down.

Where this really hits is small town America. A lot of folks in small towns are starting to see their kids bussed someplace else because there aren't enough locals to keep a school open, and they hate it.

Fron what I can tell, immigration levels right now are about the same as they were in the late 19th century, when a lot of our great grandparents first came to the US.

At that time, the scare was about the Chinese, as opposed to brown people from South of the border.
