IBM had power and if anyone remembers it was also part of cell architecture team along with sony and Toshiba. I worked with yellow dog linux the official linux distro for sony ps3 . IBM at that point was still pushing for Red hat instead of investing in yellow dog which was powerpc centric. Red hat fedora later dropped support for powerpc. So in all IBM hardware failed and now it is trying to go is way?

I was working 2 part time jobs as software developer/system admin in different cities . Though it does not count in the context of this thread as neither was remote and not full time But both my managers knew that what i was working. 8-12 one job then other job 1-4. Mind you the two jobs where in different cities and there was a commute of 30 mins between cities. Though i was junior most in both places . i guess the managers gave me leeway . I guess it all depends on your honesty and your responsibilities,

Hello,
Recently I had a skype audio job interview with a company oversees. Unfortunately the skype was behaving bad. The hiring manager who was interviewing me what Internet connection i was using via skype text When i told , i am using 4 G from my mobile. He immediately emailed me stating that 4G is not enough for Skype interview. In fact i used another application (IMO) after the failed skype call to call my family (video call) 1000 KM away. But i was appaled the hiring manager blaming my connection for failed skype call. Has any one faced same issue where your internet connection has been blamed .

Hello,
I am a system engineer with a US masters degree and over 10 years experience mostly on Linux side.
From last 6 years i have been trying to find a job in Europe . I do land interviews and job offers from Finland, Ireland, Sweden and UK . But just could not cross the final hurdle for work visa. In fact, in Finland i did got a visa , only to find that Finland has gone into recession and my sponsor putting me on hold. Latest i got a job offer from one of top university in UK. They applied for my visa and then Brexit happened. The UK home office has rejected my Certificate of sponsorship and now back to square one. Not sure what is way forward

Thank you for your comment. Yes this posting is in UK and if it does matter, this posting is in University of Oxford. And i do believe since HR does have information about my current salary and benefits , it is worth asking them to elevate the grade if possible.

Hello,
Does any one has experience , negotiating a salary in academic/govt job , then that was advertised in job description. As most salary range in University are bounded by pay scale/grade systems ,will it be unethical to ask for better salary and grade ?

Hello,
I am a HPC User support/sys admin .
Most of my professional life has been in research/academics. I do provide technical and application support for researchers utilizing HPC.
Being in academics as its pros (research , flexibility, work/life balance etc) and con (Red tape , less salary, not professional growth).
In the field of HPC, there are many vendors, who focus more sales. Has any one jumped from being a Sys admin/support role in academia/research to a sales consultant with hardware/software vendor.?
Can some one who is used to flexibility in research/academia adapt well in corporate world with tight deadlines. ?
