<p>This is nearly identical to the massive issues with retail and car theft that we have in San Francisco.<p>The uber liberals will say “oh they’re just trying to feed their families” while there are endless low skilled jobs (since the pandemic) available that pay $20+ an hour.<p>The reality is that current policing and prosecution rules/prosecution practices make being a retail thief more convenient than getting a job. Nothing is going to change until the punishment becomes a deterrent again.</p>

<p>Each engineer gets paid something around 200k-500k all in depending on seniority. I doubt just 1 team worked on this product given the bureaucracy of big tech companies like google. So why shell out millions of dollars in salary per year when the product isn’t making money?</p>

<p>Yep, we haven’t been allowed to hire anyone new on my team in a year. Definitely no headcount for junior engineers. With the cost of licenses for SaaS apps for a single developer my company would rather hire one senior engineer versus 2 juniors.</p>

<p>They need to update the minimum salary for H1B. There is no reason to bring in a QA engineer making 50k per year who tolerates poor working conditions due to lack of better options. I think that 100k would make more sense, and it arguably should be higher if the country wants to keep fulfilling the original goals of H1B.</p>
