They fully comply with Chinese requirements if you subscribe to iCloud in China, and they do this quite transparently. They do not, notably, say they don't share anything with China and then go ahead and do it anyway.
Unless Apple is straight up lying about their technology and encryption methods used to secure iCloud and their hardware, the issue of a public standoff is moot, because Apple couldn't help them if they wanted to. And while perhaps it's possible that Apple would lie to consumers to please US law enforcement, it's a bit of a stretch to say that because there haven't been any high-profile cases where law enforcement tries to force Apple to give up what they don't have, that this must be evidence that they're in cahoots.

Holy cow, yes. I switched to FF a while back, and your description of the behavior alone raised my blood pressure. They way return automatically opens whatever the first suggestion is immensely frustrating. The way hitting `return` is literally a race condition against how quickly the autocomplete returns its results.
There are some things I miss about Safari, but the search bar behavior is not one of them.

I have always been enamored by hive insects like ants and bees. Each individual's understanding, effect, even its optical view of the world is minuscule. The scope and of the individual's existence is so tiny, that the mark it makes on the world is a floating point rounding error.
In spite of that, the collective is enough to dominate a kitchen or farm or jungle many orders of magnitude larger. It knows to attack an intruder. It can give a hairless ape with years of training and three layers of protective equipment a really hard time. Hell, it can make a stir in that apex predator's society by reputation alone.
Maybe I find the magnificent result of their cooperation inspiring in its implications for humanity and the greater galaxy. Maybe I'm just a weird nerd that knows what supervillain theme I would pick if this computer stuff doesn't work out.

I wouldn't only because I've already seen enough examples of them impugning their credibility that I've been able to form my own conclusions.
I wasn't aware that the NYT was considered equivalently and oppositely biased. The articles I have read have not put up any red flags for me, but I'm not closed off to the possibility that I've missed the signs or haven't read the right articles. Hence my question.
I take it you think virtually all their reporting is sufficiently biased so as not to be considered trustworthy?

Sounds like a win-win for them. They get to market themselves as staying up to date with tech (although the HSBC personal banking app I use indicates otherwise). And when they "lose track of" the money they move for the cartel and terrorists, they can blame MongoDB and spare some execs the jail time.

> And we could make companies do that. But that will just drive organisations and land owners to hide these sites exist in the first place.
That really hit home. Sometimes there really are no-win scenarios. Absolutely tragic that these sites are lost, but there's no practical solution to preserve them.
