It's really helpful to read this thread. There's a limit to how much I'll share but one thing that might ring true for others is how sort of crazy I feel because the forces people on this forum are talking about are hitting the world very unevenly.
I like my therapist quite a bit but respectfully he has no concept of how AI is impacting huge swaths of white collar work. To people who haven't experienced the 2 year delta in what a coding job looks like, you can sort of sound like a nut. Or they won't appreciate the magnitude of it. Especially if they're not plugged into the news.
I frequently look around and ask "is this really happening?" - I think it is happening, as convenient as it might be if it weren't.

I share some of your concerns and I'd not thought about this angle - folks outside the west doing this kind of work. So thanks for sharing.
I have attempted to shift my mindset a little, thinking about how I might become an effective user of AI tools. I hope if I can do this that it will keep me employable, or even enable me to start some kind of venture down the line. Maybe there's a path forward for you and your friend on that route. Best of luck.

Why would we want an AI that writes novels though? Is this a "to see if we can" thing?
Let's say this or some future AI system writes better novels than any human author at a fraction of the cost. Novel writing is solved.
What will we have achieved?
I wish I could opt out of this world you want to create, where if you achieve your vision, I will be utterly useless and obsolete.

The situation OP described is really not that unbelievable to me. I've met one or two developers who really were "the best in the room" at a smaller company and I can imagine them writing something like this. Nobody hated them. The 70/30 balance seems relatively lopsided though.

Read a fantastic book that makes the case for 'composite cognitive processes' called "Self Comes to Mind".
It touches upon the composite nature of sight and other senses and functions.
It's ultimate goal is putting forth a theory of how self naturally arises from the composite.

Maybe. A challenge in birding is getting close enough to look at things without scaring them away. The thing about both crows and ravens is they are (relatively) unafraid of humans. So, you shouldn't struggle much to get a good enough look to differentiate.
That's assuming Ravens are present in your area. One of the first things the guide books teach is to differentiate based on range. E.g. a candidate crow/Raven in Iowa is most likely a crow, since Ravens' range doesn't include the great plains.
Let me finish by plugging birding as a relaxing pastime that doesn't require much investment (just a $25 guide book for your area), and can really enhance any time spent out doors.

I'll take the bait. Ravens' beaks are hooked s.t. the top curves slightly around the bottom, an over beak if you will. The crow's beak is roughly conical and does not hook in this manner.
Additionally the raven's beak is is longer than it's head is wide (in profile). A crow's beak from the same view is approximately the same length as it's head.
