I am Aswin (https://aswinmohan.me) and I am building Cycle. It's an integrated financial platform that combines business banking, an inbuilt accounting ledger and payroll. By combining them together we get additional context which we can use to automate much of the grunt-work associated with managing finance.
You can try out the accounting system here with no sign-up at https://demo.joincycle.co. You can join the waitlist to use it when we launch with business banking.
I have built the platform in Elixir, Phoenix, Inertia JS and React. I had launched it initially as workbill.co, as a standalone accounting platform, but later pivoted to this.

Hi HN, I am Aswin Mohan(https://aswinmohan.me), a full-stack mobile/web developer. I have been working on WorkBill (https://workbill.co) for the past 6 weeks on the side and wanted to share it here.
demo: https://demo.workbill.co/inbox (no signup needed)
video-demo: https://www.loom.com/share/9775811960ad47d7ada89007d8169d90
WorkBill is the modern, flexible accounting platform for small businesses. It is based on BeanCount(https://github.com/beancount/beancount). You can can add entries, see the chart of accounts, parse bank statements, see the balance sheet and income statement and reconcile transactions manually. We currently only support USD.
Unlike traditional accounting software where you assign a category to a transaction, WorkBill enables you to create nested accounts (Expense:Payroll:Engineering) and represent the transaction as movement of money between these accounts. This enables us to model complex transactions easily, even when we do not have explicit support for them in our platform. This also gives us richer context about each transaction that we can use to do automate most of the grunt-work associated with accounting.
I had been using Beancount to track my personal finances for over 3 years and loved how flexible it was compared to others on the market. I loved it so much that I built a personal finance app based on these principles (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42256125). When I started a Private Limited in India, I looked around for an accounting software, found everything to be lacking or in-flexible and ended up with Beancount again. That is when I decided to build out WorkBill. I have been using it for bookeeping at my own company.
The tech stack is Elixir, Phoenix combined with Inertia JS and React with help from ShadCN and TailwindCSS. It has been an incredibly productive framework. I have not used any AI tools, coded mostly in Zed with little help from ChatGPT.
We are getting started with WorkBill. With a stable accounting core, we can add invoices, bills, AR/AP automation to build the all-in-one financial stack for small businesses.
The grand idea of WorkBill is to build a world where accounting and bookkeeping mostly run on autopilot with accountants stepping in for strategic advice, planning and improving the business. if you would like to be part of that future, I are raising a small pre-seed round as well. You can ping me at aswin@workbill.co for more info.
If you would like an invite, please email aswin@workbill.co. Excited to hear your feedback!

A modern QuickBooks, based on beancount, WorkBill (https://workbill.co). You can play with it at https://demo.workbill.co.
Unlike traditional accounting platforms we expose the ledger model directly which enables our customers to model complex transactions even when we do not have direct support for it.
Been working on this for a month, and it uses Elixir, Phoenix and InertiaJS with React.

We use a proper ledger to track the flow of money. It was sizable technical investment to get the schema right, but it has made the subsequent implementations of features easier.

You are right about missing the web part. It's substantial space that we miss out on mobile. But mobile lets you enter transactions on the go, and is always there when you need it. A web version is planned in the future.
I started Paper to bring the beancount + automated parsing with python stack to everyone. Double-entry is an objectively better way to manage your finances, when we build an automatic reconciliation engine that automatically categorizes the bank transactions we'll have the best personal finance tracker app.

Automated transaction reconciliation will be a major feature in the future versions of the app. I have yet to use an app that reliably does automatic transaction registration and the dream is to build one.
India does have a decent open-banking system, used by https://fold.money

It's a characteristic of double-entry accounting. Everything is an account and transactions move money between accounts. When you receive money from your salary in your bank account, the money is being debited from an Income account. We show the debit with the negative sign.
> Yes you can, it's called a split transaction. $1000 income: split into $700 to my savings and $300 to taxes.
Even though this would work, the money is still in your bank account, which makes your savings account balance to be reported wrong.

Hello HN! I am Aswin Mohan, full-stack mobile + web developer and I built PaperMoney(https://getpaper.money). PaperMoney is a double-entry accounting based personal finance app. It can help you keep track of your expenses, assets, liabilities and your net-worth. It is based on the command-line tools beancount and ledger.
I had been using beancount to track my expenses for over two years. The plain-text accounting and reporting with fava was great, but I wanted a mobile based app to keep track on the go. Looked around existing solutions but everything fell short when compared to beancount. Also the major apps were not available outside the United States and only supported the dollar. They were based on assigning categories to a list of transactions which I found lacking coming from double-entry accounting. So I created Paper Money. It's based on double-entry accounting, you can add your chart of accounts and add balanced transactions. We'll use this to calculate your net-worth and the balances in your accounts.
It's built using React Native for the frontend and Elixir and Phoenix on the backend. We have support for both Android and iOS. I have plans to add automated account syncing and automated expense tracking in future versions.
The target audience currently is someone who is familiar with double-entry accounting but looking for a hosted mobile version. The future versions will be focused on more mainstream customers of personal finance apps, which means making the app more accessible for people without prior experience with double-entry accounting.
I am available at aswin@getpaper.money if you have any questions or querires, and excited to hear your feedback!
Links:
