I actually learned Racket in the University of Tübingen last fall too and made the exact same experience as the author. I think it's a great language to learn recursive and functional thinking and to get better at finding elegant and compact solutions for complex problems.
Many students of my class were unhappy with the language choice at my university too and I really can't understand it because I had so much fun with such a different approach to programming.
