'Nobody has a complete mental model of ' has very much been the norm since the invention of the two week's notice. What's actually new is that an architecture strategy can now be cheaply reverse engineered out of any system, adjusted where needed and immediately applied to the development process in days or hours since 'the team' is now a single dude or dudette with a fleet of robots which can see the whole code base together with its durable arch docs at once.

imagine you ask the LLM for a joke. the biggest models, multi-trillion-parameter (don't quote me) astras and fables and argons, only know like 5 jokes. obviously bullshit, but it is what it is.

same goes for pelicans. the canonical pelican riding a bicycle is riding on a sunny day on an asphalt road going through some lawns or praires, left to right.

but ask it to tell a joke about something specific, turns out it knows five jokes about those specific things.

you could say the LLMs are quite aware of the zeitgeist they're in, by construction (their RL frying automated feedback loops burn the zeitgeist right into the weights.)

It's probably the biggest, bestest, hardestest proof of 'worse is better' anyone could think of. The system is so dumb and inconsistent and simplistic it's actually a selling point: 'everyone in my team knows yaml' is an argument I kept hearing, but this conveniently ignores the fact that a) yaml is a serialization format, not a business logic description language b) the values in the yamls are a cursed mix of shell, whatever js variant it is c) actions themselves are mixes of scripts that accept completely schemaless values, so good luck figuring things out (at least in the pre-LLM era, anyway).

It's like everyone collectively agreed that assembly is bad, yes, but building CI/CD in assembly is actually good.

this is an entirely different mechanism - these people were taught everything is being hyped up and thus assume (usually rightly so) that everything is hype. what they're missing is the wisdom to not make this part of their individual and group identity, since that makes it very, very hard to update beliefs when facing overwhelming evidence.

The question is why you need the UX if models just deal with the software to get you what you want done without complaining - even if, perhaps especially if you’re a knowledgeable pro.

It’s grief.

In a couple weeks this ‘pirated’ software (not sure what’s pirated about it btw) will have good brush performance and will be handling 100 megapixel images easily precisely because of this post.

I for one am not grieving the saas rent seeking model, but as most folks here (I assume) my livelihood depends on it since that’s how my employer finances my salary. So yes, I’m concerned, but also am aware that technology cannibalizing technology is a thing and we have to move on and make ourselves useful in this new world.
