There are several public benchmarks for decision models where they don't top every single one. https://benchmarkheaven.com/jev-models/all
I guess their cheeky "Warning: AI Benchmarks, don't trust them" is their way out of that one.

So they held back a bunch of features because they knew they had basically no moat, and now they're trickling out a bit more functionality to try to convince people they are better than others and move fast? And using Apple advert slogans to show how cool they are?

I've always been interested in area codes because we all tend to keep our first phone number and it tells a little bit of your life story. I probably only know 5 area codes that really excite me because I'm familiar with the area, but I've wondered how many others are from areas I'm familiar with, but I'm just not familiar with the area code.
So in full transparency, this project came together because I finally threw an LLM at it. I've had this project written down for probably 10 years, and the initial commit to this repo was 5 years ago.
It parses your contacts, and shows you a map of where they are from (North America only). You can also choose to share it with someone else and see the overlap of your maps which I found really fascinating too.
I recognize it's a big ask to enter names and phone numbers into a random site, but this is published to github pages and the source code is right there. It is all fully client-side, no data collection, no network requests or anything. You can run it in airplane mode / disable networking on the tab once it's loaded too.
Hopefully others find it fun too!

> What does this cover - garbage collection, what else?
That's the fun part, it doesn't even cover garbage!
Jokes aside, property tax in the US typically go towards safety net funding for your community. So a lot to schools, public safety, roads/infrastructure, etc. There are definitely some places where garbage is covered in that, but a lot of places garbage collection is privatized in the US.
Sometimes hearing about how much it costs to cut down trees makes me want to quit my job. I think a lot of that is probably for liability insurance though? Both for worker injury risk and for risk of property damage. It will cost a lot to fix a house that has a tree fall through it. But also since those are market rates, it's still a very good idea to ensure they have legit insurance. You are usually SOL if they don't.

My team got really far using something called GlitchTip. It's compatible with the Sentry SDKs, but really cheap, so it felt like there were minimal consequences to switch if we ever had the need to. We only switched to Sentry cause our company was acquired and they already had a Sentry subscription going.

I have a framework laptop (https://frame.work/) and really like it! I run Ubuntu right now, and do run into issues with fractional scaling, but I haven't seen any laptop properly address that on linux.
One downside is the battery isn't amazing. I usually get ~3-4 hours when doing development work and ~6-7 with light use.

Hey HackerNews!
I've been trying to figure out ways to add a bit more calorie burn into my busy days. I know the real answer is to go outside more and get a gym membership, but I've noticed mental benefits to working while moving.
I had been using a Treadly 2 for about a year, but after having it break within 6 months, get replaced, and then having the replacement break 1 month outside of the 1 year warranty, to which they demanded I pay $500 for the shipping / repairs while it retails for $749, I've decided to give up on them and let everyone know how bad of a company they are.
Let us know how you've stayed fit while having a busy life! Especially interested in lower cost ways or more reliable equipment to use to accomplish this goal!

Recently picked up a GoPro and been a really quick and easy way to express creativity! I find myself thinking "I wonder if I could do a time lapse here" or "this would be fun to see in slow-mo".
I've by no means been a perfectionist about editing, and I think that contributes a lot to having fun with it. It kind of reminds me of how I first felt learning how to program, making one-off things that I could write terrible code in and throw away, which seems harder for me to do as of late.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but how will photos taken on my phone, and uploaded to Google Photos, be synced to Google Drive now? Backup and Sync seems to only deal with files on a Mac/Windows (yikes) client syncing to Drive/Photos, not the other way around?

> Since photos and videos will no longer sync across both products, items copied in Original Quality will count towards your storage quota in both Drive and Photos.
This is absolutely ridiculous, I feel that they should have just continued the idea that photos is a view layer on top of storage. Now I guess I'll just have to give them more money for more storage now that all my photos will double count towards my quota if I choose to use both services.

Honestly I'm hoping someday soon we will get more specific research into associations with gene markers and diets. We already have fitness programs oriented towards genetics, and starting to get diets oriented that way too. I think we need a lot more research before I believe those programs, but if it takes off like Ancestry/23andMe I think the next couple decades could see a lot of genetic based nutrition plans.

Part of giving to charity in addition to taxes is that I don't think the government (USA) is really handling my money properly when it comes to social programs. Private giving in the USA allows us to choose how our money is spent more specifically and usually lets you make a bigger impact in an area you care about. You should look up private giving in the USA, it's an astounding figure that is given every year voluntarily, there are tax deductions if you itemize, but at the end of the day I would save more money taking the standard deduction and not giving, so it's still a sacrifice monetarily for a lot of people here.

I contribute in my free time to an organization called Love Justice (Previously known as Tiny Hands International). They're focusing on sex trafficking prevention globally, and we're currently struggling to keep the tech up with the organization as they are scaling. We initially started off deving just for the country of Nepal, but the organization is now expanding to over a dozen countries and we are working primarily on adapting the web app to support that.
They have some really cool stuff in the road map that we just don't have enough volunteers to keep up. Trying to use facial recognition to identify traffickers and discover repeat offenders, trying to map out trafficking networks as they travel through various countries, etc. But full disclosure, the cool stuff isn't really in active development right now as we're addressing other issues.
You can check out our repos here: https://github.com/Tiny-Hands - Currently we're using Django for the web server and AngularJS for the client. Hit me up if you'd want to get involved or learn more! (my email is my username with gmail)
