I would love to do so! I'm a masters student who has been wishing there was an advanced compilers course in my program, there's only the undergrad level one, so this is perfect! Let me know how I can get in contact.

Both of Thorsten Ball's books in that series are phenomenal, could not recommend more. He's also got a great discussion of it on the Go Time podcast, https://changelog.com/gotime/28 and https://changelog.com/gotime/107.

Go Time is great, most of the podcasts on the Changelog network are pretty awesome, Go Time really stands out though, the hosts and guests they bring on always have great discussion. Programming Throwdown is also really good, a little less "professional" but has better in-depth discussion, their episode with Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas about "The Pragmatic Programmer" is great.

Basically it's for creating music programmatically, conceptually it's solid although it does lack some major features (you have to convert frequencies to notes, and as far as I'm aware there's no inherent option to use the note itself).

I suppose I should say the language itself is hindered by the horrible GUI application it runs in, the interface is ancient and dated, and the application crashed constantly on Mac. I took a class that that required the use of CSound, so I haven't explored the various options

While conceptually sound, CSound offers an unintuitive interface and program flow in my opinion. Also the lack of ability to do more "human-readable" actions like use music notes out of the box is a point of frustration (although it is possible with some extra steps.)
