This is not completely true. You can use a generic kernel with a custom device tree.

The only problem is that distributions currently tend to package them together, but that shouldn't be obligatory.

Well ... there are work environments where this behavior is rewarded. However you do it, if you debug, solve the problem fast and put everything in production instantly, that's an instant gratification for the risk-taking engineer.

The other engineer who doesn't take shortcuts and does thing properly will be scolded (at best).

You check and unpack once, then the rest of the "positive" codepath can use the reference without fearing null.

I fail to see how Rust would offer twice as many ways to shoot yourself in the foot ; this is a rather safe and picky language.
