appreciate the question and I understand the concern. Our algorithm will balance for this by surfacing and allowing discovery of novel ideas even if they don't have the strongest weight yet - as the source of that idea gets validated over time, their own track record will be used as a proxy for the quality of their future ideas.

The idea is that by relying on their eventual track record rather than just an individual claim, we can surface and reward novel ideas that have merit too.

This is Aki, a technical founder having previously shipped products to 1B+ people (I launched the heart button on twitter).

I built Credible because I wanted a way to know whether something I'm about to read would be worth my time. I also got tired of context-switching to verify what I read.

Credible is a Chrome extension that displays instant credibility scores directly into the pages you browse, including HN itself.

I see people come to my appearances and look at me like we've had a relationship online for a couple of years and I'm like, no, I'm so sorry, I don't know who you are. It's so sad, and you see the devastation."

At 1:52:00 in this DOAC video Steven says his team spends 30% of their time sorting through deepfake ads, to the extent he had to hire someone whose exclusive job is to spot scam videos and report them to FB etc:

I feel like there's a big undercurrent brewing but because the individual damages are not high enough and victims have limited recourse, nothing significant happens.

I think it's time to build a new system - something that can annotate the post the user is on, if there's at least another savvy user (or AI system) that can pick up on the uncanny signals. This youtube video about the "Walker Family" sham on Facebook is particularly relevant here:

@knicholes & @pil0u - I am working on a system that would prevent this exact same scenario. I appreciate the docs write up, given that you were personally impacted by this and are passionate about it, I'd love to speak.

I feel like the scale at which this is happening cross-internet must be staggering but because this is small-scale and un-reportable theft - who would the average person even go to, if they willingly sent the money, and they'd also have to get over the embarrassment of having fallen for it.

What are your thoughts on this being solved by the negative of the situation? So, instead of having to vet every single stream, tweet etc to check if it's legit, basically the idea is that you shouldn't "trust" what you are seeing unless it's explicitly endorsed via a signature from the original creator.

Obviously, if it's coming from their official channels the "signature" can be more obvious, but a layer that facilitates this could do a lot of good imo.

I resonate with this in a major way. A couple of times now we have received feedback around the product, branding etc when I've gone from not even considering any changes to the new direction being fully implemented within the product in 48H. This was unthinkable when you were part of a "machine" within a larger enterprise however nimble it may have been. The internal friction that comes up whenever you're thinking about a product change - because of the PTSD from the drawn out discussions in my prior roles - almost needs to be unlearned and coaxed out!

How do you reconcile the fact that LLMs can be pretty fair-weather? Meaning, while they can serve as a sounding board and often raise perspectives you might not have thought of, they don't have much conviction and will change their tune if you push them in the other direction enough.

earlier in my career it'd be appealing to make jokes like that, or include a comment in an email. eventually you realize that people - especially "older" or those already a few years into their career - mostly don't want to joke around and just want to actually get the thing done you are meeting about.

recently went through the process of picking a new hub and it took hours to locate one actually appropriate to my use case. Helpfully enough, chatgpt/claude were both good at locating ones with specific needs (x USB-C ports, y USB-A, no HDMI, no SD card readers), would probably have taken a lot longer without.
