Enterprise software is full of this kind of stuff. Half our customers are on year old UI's because they don't want to re-up contracts yet.

That is, features are contractual and when you've only got 50 customers but they're all paying high 6 figures does anyone really care about feature flag complexity?

I use both go and python in my day job. The code that Sonnet produces for Go is much better than the Python it creates.

This could be because our go code is typically smaller more defined services but I don't really believe that since even the isolated python services are pretty spaghetti looking.

I started putting things in a big ansible playbook repo. Don't need to have it fully managed by ansible either I mostly just have setup configured there I still do lots of by hand management.

It's useful for low velocity teams that spend too much time in review.

For everyone else it's a net loss.

I've used Gerrit years ago, I thought it was great being able to shape my diffs into stacked chunks that reviewers could effortlessly navigate in a coherent story I'm telling.

Then I joined a company that wanted you to build and ship it in the same day. Now I dread the idea of going back to week long review cycles.

Ick.

Yes, that is the purpose. It incentives R&D by providing a sanctioned monopoly on the result. The trade in return is that the public domain gets access to the trade secret after enough time has passed to provide the inventor with reward for their investment risk.

The problem is the time has been repeatedly extended across the world to the point that society gets very little from this arrangement.

At this point we're better off removing the concept of IP entirely.
